Show RATES REDUCED 01 WHE UTAH Interstate Commission Orders Or-ders Lower Quotation to Coast Points. WASHINGTON, Jan. 27. Complaint that prevailing freight rates on flour and other wheat products from Utah and Idaho to San Francisco, San Jose,. Stockton and other California and Nevada Ne-vada points are too high, was found justified today by the interstate commerce com-merce commission, which issued an order or-der requiring the railroads to establish not later than April 16 rates that Bhall not exceed more than 5 cents per hundred hun-dred pounds the present rates on wheat. "This is one of the beet things that has happened to Utah since they elected Bamberger governor.' ' said E. E. Bich, vice president of the Millers' and Grain Dealers ' Association of Utah, last night. "This gives the millers mil-lers of Utah and Idaho the relief they have sought for many years," ha continued. con-tinued. "About a year ago," said Mr. Bich, "many millers in Idaho and Utah, par ticularly Salt Lake City, hold a meeting and decided to bring the matter of freight rates on flour and wheat to tho attention of the interstate commerce commission. "In due time a representative of that body was sent here and wo presented our claims, which, we are glad to note, havo been acted favorably upon. "California sent representatives to the hearings, too. For many years wo did not have a rato on flour to California, Cali-fornia, and necessarily could not compete com-pete on business to that point. Then came a rate which was almost prohibitive. prohibi-tive. "With the new rates as ordered by the interstate commerce commission wo will have a chance to get some of that business, as it gives us an opportunity to competo with tho differential of 5 cents, which will be on a basis of $25 per car of 50,000 pounds. There is much wheat sent out from Utah every year but we have never been nble to do any business in California." |
