Canada's determination deter-mination to aid the British empire and its allies to continue the war to a triumphant finish was voiced by Sir Edward Thomas White, Canadian minister of finance, and Rudolphe Lemieux, member of the Canadian Cana-dian parliament and former postmaster general of the Dominion, In addresses at a dinner of the Canadian society here tonight. Declaring that this Is a war of "Irreconcilable ideals," Sir Thomas as- serted that "English-Saxon freedom and Prussian militarism cannot both survive. The conflict of these two ideals Is fundamental funda-mental and it appears to us in Canada that the war must go on until one ideal is firmly established and the other utterly overthrown or put In process of certain extinction. "There has been talk of peace, but there can be no durable peace while the Ideals remain at war. Let Germany establish es-tablish demonratic government and she will have no difficulty in making peace. Canadians believe there can be no compromise com-promise until the Issue is determined of what guarantee can be had for the future. fu-ture. If we consented to peace before firmly establishing the Ideal of world peace, our heroic dead would ask us from their graves for what they had been called upon to rile. "I have been recently In Great Britain and have observed the temper of the people. Make no mistake about it, the nation will see it through to the very end. Never has its spirit been more indomitable in-domitable nor its people more united. As for Canada, we shall not depart from the path wherein we have set our feet. We shall continue to send forward men and to pour out our treasure." |
