Show WONDERFUL CREATION,' SAYS PAHSOH SIMPKIH Salt Lake Minister Gives Im-j Im-j pressions of Great Film j Play, "Civilization." !lS INTENSELY HUMAN Emphasizes the Conviction That the World at Large Must Have Peace. The Ecv. Peter A. Simpkin, among others, witnessed the special presentation presenta-tion yesterday forenoon at the Orpheum theater of "Civilization," the film I play about which so much has recently appeared in the press. With respect to his impressions of the production, the Kev. Mr. Simpkin said: To the American, in every realm of creation and achievement, there is no goal short of the stupendous. In the fascinating realm of the film swift and wonderful progress has been realized by the genius of American producers, as well in dramatic value as in technique. Salt Lake City is to be congratulated congratu-lated upon the opportunity to see a really groat film in ' 'Civilization" 'Civiliza-tion" to bo exhibited at the Orpheum Or-pheum theater this week. Presents Peace Plea. The fact that it cost a million dollars to produce would be but an interesting incident, and the further fur-ther one that only two others ever made are as ambitious in range and object would make it only a curio apart from the fact that a vital world theme of present interest is artistically and wonderfully filmed. "Civilization" is a serious and worthy effort to add to the growing, grow-ing, conviction that the world mu6t have peace. Inspired by the great war in Europe, Eu-rope, the drama plays quite impartially impar-tially with the motive and the struggle. strug-gle. Thomas Ince built a parliament house and a palace, and here is set in a remarkable opening the peril that lies in autocracy with its dreams of empire. Without agreeing with some of the deductions that the author sets in the text, one is carried by the scenes depicting the hideousness of battle and trench, the inhumanity of bomb and torpedo, the elemental wickedness of the hate that sets men at the awful business of war, into an intense conviction of the beauty of peace. Intensely Human. The story is human and there is introduced daringly, but reverently, the Christ spirit and teaching. Woman 's power is well suggested in the organization whose appeal at last brings war to its end as "the mothers of men ' ' come in a scene that grips, kneeling in the rain before tho palace, to make an appeal that breaks at last, as it is joined to the stirring of his conscience, the will and ambition of the king. "Civilization" is a great and gripping drama, reverent in its touch on sacred things, revealing in its simulation of the battle field, passionate with humanity, religious m its spirit and sure to be formative forma-tive of tho fine vision necessary to world peace. Agrees With Wilson. President Wilson's warm and unqualified un-qualified indorsement of the film is justified and it is safe to say that it is the greatest picture drama ever presented to the Salt Lake public. In its theme and its dramatic quality, its really vast plan, its fidelity fi-delity of detail and its earnest and worth-while preachment it is worthy the serious consideration of all thoughtful people. Its presentation presenta-tion is a service to any American community. |
