Ralph DePalma of Italy, sprint champion of 11 i T, captured the first annual International Inter-national sweepstakes on the speedway track this afternoon in five straight heats. He akso huns up four world's records in accomplishing' this feat. Ralph Mulford took- second money, with Dario Resia third. Arthur Duray was fourth and Ira Vail fifth. The five heats were of 2, 10. 20, SO and 50 miles, respectively, with a flying start in each. The winner was decided on the point Hystem. The final standing was: D-;PIama 30, Mulford 22, ReKta 19. Duray 6, Vail 4. The purse was divided as follows: $700'l to the winner. SouOO to the second, $3000 to tho third, $1500 to the fourth and $500 to the fifth. The latter was four lengths ahead of Furay. Chevrolet, who also started, broke his crankshaft in the back stretch anil was declared out. The ten-mile furnished a corker of a race between DePalma and Resta, the italirm winning by two lengths. Mulford was third, a. quarter of a mile bacli.with Duray trailing fifty lengths behind. DePalma led again in the twehtymile heat by a leng'th, with Reeta second and Mulford a length and a half back.. Chevrolet, Chev-rolet, njio had started again in Duryea's car, had another breakdown in the seventh mile. The thirty-mile heat was another easy victory for DcFal main ma-in the final heat of fifty miles, PePalma trailed Resta and Mulford until the final mile, when he gave his car its head and passed the others with little effort, winning win-ning by two lengths from Mulford, who was five lengths in front of Resta. Vail dropped out at the end of the thirtieth mile. The races were witnessed by more tham 30.000 persons. Bill Pickens announced that he would try to bring the winners in a 150-mile contest con-test in the very near future. |
