Show Cause Not Clear. WASHINGTON, Aug. 17. Reports to the navy department today did not make clear the cause of the destruction of the British oil steamer Mirlo, which caught fire after a gasoline explosion yesterday afternoon near Cape Hatteras, N. C. Nine men of the crew were listed as missing. According to the navy's Information, no submarine was sighted, but Jt was possible that a torpedo hit the ship, causing caus-ing the explosion. The Mirlo was armed. More complete details have been re- ' quested from the commandant of the Sixth naval district at Charleston, S. C, 1 through whom the reports were received. |
