Although beneficial- rains tended to ease the corn market in the earlier trading, prices soon began to swing upward, and throughout the rest of the day the bears were at a disadvantage. Most of the buying buy-ing resulted from a report by a leading expert that the yield of the seven surplus sur-plus states would be 410.000,000 bushels less than their harvest last year amounted amount-ed to. He said the severe hot wave, lasting eleven days, had taken place wnen corn was at the most critical stage, between the silk and roasting ears, and that the unseasonable frost last year had done less permanent harm than had now been done by the hot wave. Oats rose with corn. Gossip was current cur-rent that oats shippers had large contracts con-tracts to fill by September 1. Provisions sagged, owing to lack of support. sup-port. Weakness was emphasized by the fact that shipments of lard and meats for the week were much smaller than a year ago. RANGE OF THE LEADING FCTCRES. Opn. Hi5b. Low. Closa.
