Show WOMEN VALUABLE IN BIG SHIPYARDS In Many Kinds of Work They Have Been Found to Outclass the Men. LONDON. Aug. 17. Women have outclassed out-classed mn in certain work in British shipvards and more of them are being added to the shipbuilding forces as rapidly rap-idly as possible. t lord Kurness s shipyards on the Tees TOO women are working, with spades and 'shovels, on extensions. Pome of the women havo been assisting in the building of a temporarv railway ar the yards and others laving concrete platforms on which the keels ot ships will be put down. In preparing concrete for the keel platforms, plat-forms, gangs of women work beside gangs of men and in one instance the women '.beat the. men by four cubic yards. Numerous Nu-merous other incidents have been cited wherebv the women outpointed the men workers on the same kind of work. There are branches of work from which women are bari id. because they lack the mucrlar endurance, hut whenever possible pos-sible Lord Furuess has been replacing fit men of military age with women. Vt rrst there were many sprained ankles an-kles due to the habit of women going to work in flinisv boots, often with worn peg-lop heels, which were of no use i-imorr- loose soil and stones. A standard low-heted shipyard boot has rpn; been introduced. |
