Show Region girls Vikings, Wildcats take pair of league wins By TOM HARALDSEN I Sports Editor I Viewmont High rode outstanding outstand-ing performances from sophomore sensation Melissa Eggett, along with clutch scoring from Becky Yeates and Tiffany Twitchell, to a pair of Region Four girls' basketball basket-ball victories last week. Woods Cross remained the only unbeaten team in league with two wins, while Bountiful split a pair of games and Davis fell twice. Action will continue Thursday with Highland High-land visiting Davis, Viewmont traveling to East and Bountiful at Woods Cross, all at 4 p.m. TUESDAY GAMES In Kaysville, Woods Cross ran to a 48-2 1 halftime lead and coasted to a 78-47 win over Davis. The Wildcats played perhaps their best game of the year, shooting 56 percent per-cent from the field for the contest. Woods Cross led 66-33 after three quarters before starters were resting rest-ing on the bench. Carolyn Knight, who earned Athlete of the Week honors last week for her efforts, led Woods Cross with 25 points. Amy Mason had another solid performance with 18 points, Marci Heaps had 14 and Jodie Warhurst 13. Davis was paced by senior Heather Peel, who scored 12 points. Whitney Nelson and Sharla Cook added seven apiece for the Lady Darts. At Viewmont, the Lady Vikings started fast, then held off a spirited Bountiful comeback to earn a 67-54 win over the Braves. Viewmont led 19-18 after one period, but Eggett got hot in the second quarter, hit- r-- "" ting 8 of 9 shots from the field as Viewmont built a 46-28 halftime advantage. Eggett had 25 first half points. Bountiful played tough defense in the second half, however, pulling pull-ing to within 10 at 52-42 in the third period. Despite foul trouble, the Braves shut down Eggett in the second half and got within striking distance before Viewmont iced the game in the fourth period. Viewmont View-mont shot 51 percent from the field (26 of 51) en route to the win. Eggett finished with 28 points, Yeates Ye-ates had 19 for the Vikes. Bountiful was led by Lisa Wilkinson, Julia Thornley and Mona Hibbert, all with 12 apiece. In Salt Lake City, East's Sara Linebaugh sank a free throw with no time remaining to propel the previously winless Leopards to a 40-39 victory over Highland. FRIDAY GAMES At Viewmont, the Lady Vikes used another strong second quarter to build a 31-15 lead, then held off Davis for a 68-44 win. Davis' loss certainly was no fault of guard Jaylynn Jorgensen, who scored 21 points, 17 of those in the second half, including nine on three long three-point shots. The Vikes used overall scoring to top the Darts, as Tiffany Twitchell Twitch-ell had 16 points, Yeates added 13 and Eggett came through with another fine performance with 25. For the week, Eggett made 12 of 13 shots from the field during the second quarter of her two games, scoring 27 points. Davis narrowed the Viewmont lead to 37-34 in the third period, after Peel canned a three-point shot, but the Vikes rolled away after af-ter that to move to 3-1 in league, 11-3 overall. At Bountiful, the Lady Braves dumped East 56-37 to move to 3-1 in region play. Stephanie Reading and Mona Hibbert scored 16 apiece, and Wilkinson added 12 as Bountiful built a 29-16 halftime lead and steadily pulled away. Thornley was plagued by foul trouble, but dished off several assists and scored five points, as did teammate Robyn Ludwig. At Highland, Woods Cross moved to 4-0 in league, 12-2 over- , all, with a 67-30 win over the Rams. The contest was never seriously in 'question as the Wildcats outplayed Highland. Knight was hot again, scoring 21 points to pace the Wildcat attack, while Heaps added 20 and Mason 13. Warhurst had eight points for Woods Cross as well. Teams play just once the next two weeks, with the Bountiful-Woods Bountiful-Woods Cross matchup this Thursday Thurs-day the most interesting. The second round begins a week from tomorrow, with the state tournament tourna-ment set for Feb. 29 through March 5 at Murray High. |
