Show Contest to promote literacy awareness By TOM HARALDSEN BOUNTIFUL A statewide essay contest for students from five to 18 years old is underway, designed to promote literacy awareness. It is part of Utah Governor Norm Bangerter's Project Literacy-Utah. Literacy-Utah. The essay contest is supported sup-ported by a grant from Sylvan Learning Centers of Utah, including includ-ing Bountiful's center at 390 N. Main Street. Karen Romney, spokeswoman for the Bountiful Sylvan Learning Center, said the contest is open to students in one of three age categories: cate-gories: 5-10, 11-14 and 15-18. The winner in each category will compete com-pete in a national contest, and the grand prize winner nationally in each age group will win a trip to Washington, D.C., to present their essays to top education and political politic-al leaders. Topic of the essay contest is "How My Life Would Be Different If I Couldn't Read." Local and state prizes will include Pictionary games, Nintendo video games. television sets, stereos and computers. compu-ters. Local prizes for the Davis County area have been donated by Shipley and Associates, Inc., as well as Sylvan, Miss Romney said. On March 26, the state winners and their parents will be guests of the Utah Jazz at a VIP dinner and the Jazz game with Milwaukee. The Honorary Advisory Council for Project Literacy-Utah includes Fred S. Ball, president of the Salt Lake Area Chamber of Commerce; Governor Bangerter, former U.S. Secretary of Education T.H. Bell, U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Instruc-tion James R. Moss, U.S. Congressman Con-gressman Wayne Owens, and director of the Utah State Library Commission Amy Owen. Sylvan Learning Centers became be-came involved due to their efforts at supplementing classroom education edu-cation with programs designed to increase reading and math skills.
