Show Principal moves on Fkmmg named as . arm director After four years as principal of Viewmont High School, Dr. Nancy Nan-cy Fleming is leaving to take the position of area director over Layton, Davis, and Viewmont High Schools and their "feeder" junior high and elementary schools. She will oversee school operations in the area of curriculum curricu-lum development and implementation. implementa-tion. This is a newly created position and will be effective as the second semester begins at the end of January. Dr. Fleming will be honored today to-day during an open house to be held between 3-6 p.m. at the school. Students, parents, educators and co-workers have praised Dr. Fleming's efforts and success at Viewmont. An athlete at the school, Shan-dell Shan-dell Smoot, said, "I have very fond memories of Dr. Fleming. She always al-ways seemed to be at all of the athletic events. But the one I remember re-member most was when she awarded me with my state championship cham-pionship medal for wrestling. I'm sure I speak for the whole student-body student-body at Viewmont when I say we'll really miss her." Scott Porter, editor-in-chief of "Danegeld," the Viking newsmagazine, news-magazine, wrote in a recent tribute "Throughout my short two and a half years in contact with Dr. Fleming Flem-ing I have been extremely impressed impress-ed with her strong support of student stu-dent activities. I have yet been to any sporting, singing or academic event at which Dr. Fleming wasn't present, giving her support. She has helped the school acquire thousands of dollars of computer equipment because of her efforts." Assistant Principal Paul Waite has worked very closely with Dr. Fleming for the past 4'2 years. "She has helped me a great deal in becoming an effective administrator. administra-tor. The school's secretarial staff gave Dr. Fleming high marks also. They praised her as "a great goal setter and goal evaluator. She is neither afraid to initiate new methods of doing things nor scrap traditional methods that are not functioning successfully. She is deeply concerned about what is fair and best for the students, faculty facul-ty members and staff. She uses a 'common sense' approach together with wisdom and good judgement in solving problems. She exhibits a delightful sense of humor in every aspect of her leadership." Choral music director Jeanne McGuire said she feels she has "worked to achieve is a better balance ba-lance between academics, the arts, and athletics." Industrial arts teacher, Bob Jones, added, "If you go to Dr. Fleming with a problem, you'd better bet-ter be ready for the answer, because be-cause she will give you immediate results." Dr. Fleming has earned praise from every department. Arlene Stringham, manager of school food services at Viewmont said "Dr. Fleming took a giant step for women in that she was the first woman high school principal in the Davis County Schools." A member of the custodial staff said "She involved us in all school activities as a part of the staff. In the last few years there have been many changes to improve the appearance of Viewmont High School." Konnie Larsen, past president of PTSA, who has worked with Dr. Fleming for the past four years, recalled re-called how dedicated Dr. Fleming was to the students. "The first thing that impressed me when Dr. Fleming assumed the position of principal at Viewmont High School was that she set some firm ground rules and guidelines for student conduct and behavior. "As a parent, I was grateful that she cared enough about the students stu-dents to let them know what she expected of them. She established much needed recognition programs prog-rams such as the Academic Letters and Academic All-stars which motivated students to achieve great success. "She really established an 'open door' policy. Her door was open to students and parents at any time. Students were aware that Dr. Fleming was always out in the halls during class changes, before, and after school. At the end of every school year, she met with the faculty, facul-ty, the PTSA, and other parents to evaluate that school year and set goals for the upcoming year." Mr. and Mrs. Steven Murray of West Bountiful are very grateful to Dr. Fleming. She was very supportive suppor-tive when their son, Steven, died tragically soon after graduation. When they went to register their son, Shawn, for fall classes, Dr. Fleming and Paul Waite met them at the door and helped them through the process. It was later learned that Dr. Fleming had nominated Shawn for scholastic All-American Scholar for which he was chosen by a national committee. com-mittee. As a substitute teacher and mother of a former Viewmont student, stu-dent, Shirley Van Wagenen appreciates appre-ciates Dr. Fleming's discipline techniques and teacher support. With this deep commitment to education has gone a sense of fairness expressed in her ability to put people at ease, talk out problems prob-lems and grant due process where the issues indicated that need. - "Dr. Fleming has worked closely with staff members and has been highly visible at every sort of extracurricular extra-curricular activity in both sporting events and in the arts. Her calm demeanor under stress, her cheerful cheer-ful good nature and her sense of humor have endeared her to teachers. She is an expert problem-solver problem-solver who quickly and efficiently carries out a project. "Under her direction the school, has had a much-needed face lift, including carpeted halls and freshly-painted walls and lockers. The interior is now far more attractive and inviting than before." In the four a a-half years Dr. Fleming has been at Viewmont, she t has earned the respect and affection of Viewmont's faculty and students. One educator summed up the feelings of those honoring Dr. Fleming when he said, "We say goodbye with regret.
