Show Recycling used motor oil More than 100 service stations throughout the State of Utah are serving ser-ving as collection points for motorists to drop off used motor oil so that the oil can be recycled and thus reused. Experts estimate that American. throw away some 390 million gallons of used motor oil every year. Approximately 85 million Americans change the oil in their cars themselves. The used oil is usually dumped down storm drains, thrown in the garbage or dumped in the ground resulting in a number of environmental problems. Dumping used oil is not only a source of pollution, it is also a waste of an increasingly in-creasingly valuable energy resource. Used motor oil never loses its lubricating properties. Once the oil has been cleaned in the re-refining process, the original quality is restored. Every gallon of oil that is recycled is one less gallon the United States has to import. Recycling oil is especially important because it takes 42 gallons of crude oil to yield 24 quarts of motor oil and only one gallon of used motor oil to yield 2'2 quarts of re-refined motor oil. Utahns who change their own motor oil are encouraged to drain it into a plastic container, and deliver it to any of the participating service stations displaying the "recycle used motor oil" emblem in the window. For more information on recycling used motor oil or a list of participating service stations, contact the Utah Energy Hotline at l-8O0-6fi2-3633. |
