Two photographs proved to be quite costly for Uintah High School's Rick Morton in the 3-A State Track and Field Meet, Saturday as he finished in a photo finish in two races and each time the photograph defeated Morton. Morton and Spencer DeGraw of Davis finished in a photo finish in the race for first place in the 100 meter dash at 11.34, but after looking at a photograph of the event, DeGraw was awarded first place and Morton second place. Morton finished in a photo finish in the battle for fourth place in the 200 meter dash, but Alan Newbold of Woods Cross was awarded fourth place and Morton placed fifth. DeGraw, who defeated Morton in the 100 meter dash, also placed first in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.55. "The 100 meter dash was a close race. Morton and DeGraw were nip and tuck. Morton had the lead most of the way, but McGraw got the lead. Morton regained it, but DeGraw got it back and the race ended in a photo finish," stated Uintah High School track coach, Curg Belcher. Uintah's Dave Emery captured second place in the javelin with a toss of 176 feet. Mountain View's Mike Colyar placed first at 181 feet. Anthony Skedros of Viewmont placed third. Emery won the Region 7 crown with a toss of 196'10". "The weather conditions con-ditions were terrible. It snowed and rained for two days. They were slipping and sliding in the javelin," stated Belcher. The Utes' Jerry Allred garnered seventh place in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:28.3 and placed seventh in the 3200 meter run with 9:51. Dave Andreason of Murray pocketed first place in the 3200 meter run with a time of 9:43.82 and Loren Young of Timp-view Timp-view placed second. Dave Rueckert of , South netted first place in the 1600 meter run with a time of 4:21.45 and Carbon's John Powell placed second. Andreasen of Murray netted fifth place. Uintah captured 11th place in the 3-A state meet with a total of 18 points. , Orem placed first at 60 counters and . American Fork pocketed second place at 54 points. Belcher added,"It was a real good year in track at Uintah High School. We had some bad breaks at the state meet. We had the kids to win it. If our times at state had been close to our region marks we could have won the state crown. The Uintah athletes still did a good job." Rich Weight of Bountiful won the 3-A high jump event with a leap of 6'5" and Malcolm Hunsaker of Orem won the pole vault at 13'3". Keith Robinson of American Fork won the crown in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 15.19 and Cary Whittingham of Provo win the shot put with a toss of 60' Vi", which is a new 3-A record. Ben Lomond placed first in the 400 meter relay at 43.81 and Richard Benns of South nabbed top honors in the 400 meter run at 49.46. James Turner, Orem, won the long jump with a leap of 21'5V and Robinson, American Fork, won the 300 intermediate hurdles at 39.35. Boun-tiful's Boun-tiful's Dave Barney won the 800 meter run with a time of 1:59.35 and Whittingham Whit-tingham Provo, nabbed first place in the discus at 16111". Ben Lomond placed first in the medley relay at 3:38.80 and American Fork netted first place in the 1600 meter relay at 3:23.89. Two Uintah Ute lady tracksters captured cap-tured honors in the 3-A State Track Meet, Friday and Saturday in Ogden. Pennie Murray pocketed third place in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:22.6. Shelly Sharp of Cyprus placed first at 2:21.18 and Kathy Lawson of Viewmont netted second place. Misty Larson of Carbon placed fourth. Uintah's Kathy Chivers pocketed sixth place in the 200 meter dash. Melody Jones of Mountain View placed first at 26.13. The Uintah Utes garnered 18th place in the 3-A meet with seven points. Mountain View pocketed first place with 92 points and Carbon placed second se-cond at 76 points. Orem placed third at 48 points and Davis captured fourth place at 41 counters. Provo nabbed fifth place at 33 counters. Cyprus and Judge Memorial captured ninth place at 16 points. Murray tied for 15th place with Dixie at ten points. South 's Jane Hansen won the javelin with a toss of 126'4" and Lisa Larson, Carbon, nabbed first place in the 3200 meter run at 11:24.70. Her sister, Mistv Larson, placed second. |
