(Ned) Egan, there passed I " from baseball one of the most interesting figures the game has ever j known. Egan was known as "King of the Bushers." This designation he i gained by reason of his long service in the lower class minors. For twenty years j Egan managed clubs in such leagues as the Central association, most' of his time being spent in Iowa. During that time he developed scores of plavers who found their way to the majors. He was uniformly successful us a bush league manager. He won eight pennants in fifteen years and five times finished second. Last fall he accepted the managership of the Milwaukee club of the American Ameri-can association. Soon after the beginning of the year, while skating, Egan suffered severe spinal injury in a fall. He entered 'a sanitarium, but made no progress toward recovery. His continued ill health proved upon his mind, and I last week he became so despondent that he took his own" life in a Chicago hotel. During the winter Egan wrote a series of articles describing his experiences as bush league manager. The Tribune carried the articles for sixteen weeks, and the series proved to be one of the most successful and interesting collections of baseball stories ever written. |
