Show FRANCISCAN PRIEST HONORED BY K. OF C. Fourth Degree Names Salt Lake Assem-bly Assem-bly in Memory of Fathor Antana-zio Antana-zio Dominguez. The supreme, or fourth decree, of the Knights of Columbus in Utah, has named the Salt Lake assembly "Unmin-guez," "Unmin-guez," in honor of tho Spanish Franciscan Fran-ciscan priest, Father Antanazio Dominguez, Domin-guez, who, with Father Silvtestra Velez cle Kscalante, made I he earliest recorded explorations of Utah. These priests left Santa Fe, Nj M.. July 29, 177ti, and explored portions of 1 'olorado. They entered Utah and .were the first white men to look upon the waters of Utah lako. They remained with tho Laguna tribe of Indians several days, preaching to them and instructing them in Christian doctrine. Leaving here September 25, 1776, they continued through southern Utah, crossed from the east for the first time by white men the Grand Canyon of tho Colorado, and returned to Santa Fe January 1777. They charted tho explored land, described the tribes they had visited, the botany of the country, named the rivers and mountains and left a valuable history. |
