Show TOO FREE OF SPEECH, Ml COURTS TROUBLE Pro - German, American Born, Faces Charge of Espionage Act Violation. Too free expression of sympathy for the German government resulted yesterday yester-day in the filing of a complaint against Paul Rookhuyzen, Jr., of Ogden, on the charge of violation of the espionage act. The complaint was issued out of the office of-fice of the United States district attorney, at-torney, and was filed with William H. Reeder, Jr., of Ogden, United States commissioner for the northern district of Utah. Rookhuyzen is alleged to have expressed ex-pressed the hope that every American ship which attempts to cross the ocean will be destroyed. He is also alleged to have declared that he would just as soon see Germany win the war as the present conflict is merely a matter of graft, and that no matter whether the kaiser or President Wilson rules the world. "If Germany wins," he is accused ac-cused of saying, "mid the kaiser comes over here, wc will have plenty of beer." Rookhuyzen is an American citizen,, -born in the United States of German parents. He was arrested several weeks ago . on a charge which held him in custody pending investigation by the department of justice. There are three counts in the complaint, obstructing the draft, giving aid and comfort to the enemy aud attempting to cause insubordination insub-ordination and sedition. On each of the counts there is a maximum penalty of $10,000 fine or twenty years in a federal fed-eral prison. |
