The September issue carries several sev-eral stories appealing to' the interest of the home owner or builder, In the way of suggesting appropriate decorations for the inferior. The front cover of this month's book rortrayp a large half-tone cut of the Cnuonwood lakes, which is an attractive portrayal of the "source of part of SaJt Lake City's water supply." Treating the subject of "The Upstairs Veranda "Living Room.'' Bertha M. Holland, Hol-land, writes an article for the Bruneau-Hili Bruneau-Hili Monthly in which she says: The inhabitants of warm - climates long ago understood and developed the art the comfortable and delightful delight-ful art of living out of doors. The people of Italv have long had their loggias, and the people of the Orient their hanging balconies, made beautiful beauti-ful with vines and flowering plants. And now in America, in those parts where the hot season is even of comparatively short duration, this same art Is developing. It Js perhaps a misconception that this is a luxury only for the rich. On the contrary, it is within the possibilities of achievement by the very poor, as one may discover hy a visit to some of the so-called slum regions -of our big cities. In Boston, for instance, where tills effort haa been stimulated through the gener- i osity of one of it? philanthropic women, who offered, a prize for the best result, one will find the tiniest corners of the roof-tops in one of its poorest and most congested sections radiant with the colors of flowering plants, arid the men. women and children enjoying thiB refreshment from the heat of the c ro wd ed and seething streets. |
