Show BRITAIN PLEASED BY CANADA'S RESPONSE S. J. Ikiwriham of Ottawa Going to Coast to Se the Big Expositions, Ex-positions, Canada's response to the mother country's call for troops has been verv gratifying to the British war office, and recruiting continues at a lively rate, said S. J. Downbarn of Government Govern-ment house, Ottawa Canada, who is stopping off to see Salt Lake City on hie way to the coast. ilr. Downham is on the staff of the Duke of Connaught, governor general of Canada. He is taking a vacation trip to the California expositions, having hav-ing had a rather strenuous summer in Ottawa. He arrived vesterdav and registered reg-istered at the Newhouse hotel, intending intend-ing to stop over odIv a dav. Howevor. he was so impressed with the citv that he has decided to remain several days. ''This trip is merelv a pleasure tour of my own to get a bit of rest. ' ' said Mr. Downham at the Newhouse vesterdav. vester-dav. "I am not traveling on an'v official offi-cial business."' Discussing the war. Mr. Downham spoke about the gratifying recruiting in Canada, and said, with enthusiasm, that there could be no outcome to the great conflict but victory for the allies Asked as to how soon those in officio i circles in Canada looked for an end to the conflict, Mr. Downham said: Xo one can tell, of course, and everyone does not have the same view. Some think that the war will be ended by sprjng. others say it will take another twelve mouths I do not believe that it will be soon, but I am sure that we will be victorious in the end. Troops are continually leaving Canada Cana-da for the battlefields, said the visitor but it is impossible to say how manv have gone and how manv are in readiness readi-ness to take up the fight.
