Show I FATHER BRADY SEES UTAH STATE PRISON Jail Mission Worker Declares De-clares Prisoners Are Kept Healthy. The Rev. Father Edward H. Brady of Los Angeles, in charge of the Catholic Cath-olic mission work in the jails of Los Angeles, yesterday visited the Utah state prison and declared that conditions condi-tions there appeared to be almost ideal for a penitentiary. Father Brady ha visited several large penitentiaries in different parts of the United States and has made quite a study of prison conditions. Father Brady and hiB friends were shown throiigh the entire institution by Deputy Warden A. C. Ure. During the visit the guests witnessed a portion of a ball game between two baseball teams composed of convicts. Father Brady was keenly interested in the game and became quite enthusiastic over the skill shown by the prisoners. The cleanliness of the large cellhouse. the prison kitchen, the hospital and tho bakehouse appealed to the reverend visitor. vis-itor. He was surprised to note tho cleanliness of the cells and the prison ers ' bunks. Father Brady and his friendB also visited the prison farm and inspected the fine herd of Guernseys. "I was greatly impressed," Father Brady said, "with the clean and neat appearance of the prisoners and the absence ab-sence of prison pallor. I didn't see a crime-hardened face among the prison ers. All of them appeared strong and healthy. The work on the prison farm. I am Hure, is doing wonders for these men and will go a loug way toward reforming thorn. ''Utah is fortunate in not having a large number of prisoners. The convicts hero do not gutter as they do in overcrowded over-crowded prisons. Utah is fortunate in having a large acreage for farming, thus affording healthful outdoor exercise for the prisoners. Healthful employment is one of the things most heeded in helping out those who have marie a mistake mis-take and wish the opportunity to get right again. The atmosphere of the Utah prison, in" my opinion, is excellent, much better than that of many prisons in the country." |
