Show ASPHALT OILS ARE BETTERFOR MOTORS Uncle Sam's Expert Comes Forward and Confirms Culmers' Contention. The Oulmers company of Salt Lake anrl rnrlepf-nuVnce, Kan., has always contended con-tended that ite patented process of refining re-fining luhrlrating oils from t'tah asphalt as-phalt bases enabled turning- out lubricants lubri-cants that were vastly superior to other standard makes of oils. Hydrocarbon engineers and chemists have long since agreed on this fact and now Uncle Sam indorses the theory. Lieutenant O. S. iiryan. United States navy, in an article in "the Journal of the American Society of Naval Kniineers, discusses motor-cylinder lubrication exhaustively ex-haustively and scientifically and in the course of his article he says: Oils made from asphalt base crudes have shown themselves to be much bettor adapted to motor cylinders, cylin-ders, as far as their carbon-forming proclivities are concerned, than are the paraffine base Pennsylvania oils. The carbon formed from the latter lat-ter is, as a rule, extremely hard and cliDgs to the metal surface that it is deposited on. while that from the former is soft and can be easily wined off. Thin would he expected from a consideration of tho nature of the hydrocarbons composing the oil, and it has been demonstrated in actual ac-tual practice. The explanation lies in the fact that the paraffine baso oils are generally composed of the paraffine neries of hydrocarbons, while the agphalt ba-ie oils are composed mainly main-ly of ethylene and naphthene series. One of tho characteristics of the tatter two sories as compared with the paraffine series is tho tendency ten-dency to distill without decomposition. decomposi-tion. Consequently no gum will be formed on the cylinder walls, and the carbon liberated will bo mostly dim'harged with tho exhnmst gases.
