Show jROOT FOR PRESIDENT : IS GHOICEJDf SPR Governor Discusses Politic at Washington; Says Republicans Re-publicans Will Win. Special to Th Tribune. WASHINGTON, Sept. 4.--Washinj ton newspapers today print interview with Governor Spry quoting him as sa; iug: The Republicans of the western states are begiuuing to express preferences for candidates. My personal choice is Elilm Root. Ho would make the strongest and tho best candidate tho Republicans could name, in my judgment. Senator Sen-ator Weeks has rauoh strength in some western states; so have Senators Sen-ators Cummins and Burton. Senator Borah is our neighbor and we liko him, but 1 do not believe the party will go for a candidate in a state so small and unimportant politically political-ly as Idaho. While the whole country is behind be-hind tho president in his negotiations negotia-tions with the belligerent nations of Europe, I do not take the view that this means the Democrats will win a victory next year. I do not believe the European war will overshadow over-shadow all other issues in this country. If the war should end, it is a certainty, in mv opinion, that the Republicans would win, And even should the war continue we shall be protected by an adequate tariff. The people" are thinking more than ever about a tariff now. Had it not been for tho European war the low tariff enacted by tho Democratic party would have caused a serious business depression depres-sion throughout the country. Fortunately For-tunately for us, the war has helped business. |
