John Hart-I Hart-I well, held as the leader of automobile bandits who terrorized Butte with frequent fre-quent holdups and who was wounded In i the right leg, donned old clothes worn i by workmen repairing the city jail and made his escape by walking past the jailer, detectives and half a dozen others in the jailer's office today. Hartwell had been let out In the corridor cor-ridor to take a bath after his sweetheart, sweet-heart, Irene Wilson, formerly of Salt Lake, in which city she met Hartwell. who was a rancher near Provo, had pleaded with the officers to let Hartwell out of solitary confinement. Passing unnoticed un-noticed through the jaJl office, Hartwell shot through an allev and ten minutes later "Slim ' Harris, also from Salt Lake, another suspect, said his cellmate had gone. Hartwell knew that the workmen in the corridors were allowed unquestioned entrance en-trance to the jail. He donned a slouch hat, put a hod on his shoulder and started for tho mortar box. His sweetheart sweet-heart was on a floor above looking out when Hartwell gained his liberty. She was charged today with having dressed Hartwell's wound the night of the holdup, when thirty persons were robbed in the roadhouse district, and of having given him another suit of clothes. Tonight every peace officer in the county is hunting for Hartwell, who was arrested after a hard chase, in which the officers were led by Nell McCoy, who claimed to be a confidante of the gang from Salt Lake. |
