Show INITIAL CALL FOR "IT FOOTBALLERS TUESDAY Signing' of John Breathed Means a Strong Freshman Fresh-man Aggregation; University of Chicago Methods Will Again Be Used. MOLESKIN lovers in Salt Lako will see tho first gathering of the 1015 University of Utah gridiron warriors when they come together for tho initial instructions from Coach Nelson H. Norgren and his new assistant, John Breathed. Moreover, More-over, it will mark a turning point in the manner of coaching at the state institution, insti-tution, along which line the first move was made last year, with the coming of the University at' Chicago athlete. When Breathed, star track man and football player of the University of Chicago, was obtained recently to aid in developing athletic teams at the university, uni-versity, it became more evident that Xorgren is intent not only on developing develop-ing championship aggregations for the present year, but also on building up a coaching system which will continue to put forth strong teams tor years to come. Breathed to Coach Freshman. It is announced that Breathed will coach the freshman football team this fall, the lirst step in reconstructing the coaching system at the "U." It is very evident to- all who have watched Nor gren at work with his football protegee that he has brought au entirely new type of football into this part "of the country a style which has beon used and largely developed bv A. A. Stagg, the well-known University of Chicago athletic director. That it "is superior to the old type is also evident. It ha never been -used by any of the schools of the Rocky Mountain conference, and it is doubttul if the coaches tu these schools understand how to combat it. Being a new kind of football in this region, it can be learned only under the supervision of Xorgren himself. As the freshmen are alwavs kept apart from the regular varsity sguad, forming a separate machine of their own, it follows fol-lows that to make them useful to the school in the years following their coach must have been trained in the same school of football that has become the standard of the institution. It is plain then, the advantage of having a man such., as Breathed Training the infants, while Xorgren is handling the varsitv squad. For several years thev were teammates under the persona "instruction "instruc-tion of the great Chicago coach himself. Advantages of System. The first advantage of this method is that a young player upon graduating from the freshman" squad will be prepared pre-pared for the more advanced work on the varsity eleven. Another advantage, and a more direct one is that the freshman fresh-man team will be of more use to the school eleven in scrimmage practice. First, they will understand the proper method of meeting the attack of the more experienced players, and also they will be able to put up an offense stronger strong-er possibly than that of an actual foe. All this will help both elevens. If tie eastern system is strictly followed, fol-lowed, a player ww find it almost impossible im-possible to win a place on the varsity eleven unless he spends his first year on the freshman aggregation. And this will call for the same hard work, knocks and bruises that the school team has to undergo the kind of preparation to which Norgren treated his aspiring pigskin pig-skin hopefuls last fall. Tho schools of the Rocky mountain conference, and almost all schools west of tho M issouri river, have not taken advantage of the changes in the toot, ball rules during the past few years. Similarly, it is thought oy many of the greatest coaches in the country, the fnr eastern schools have overlooked advantages, ad-vantages, relying more on tho old conservative con-servative style of play. On the other hand, middle western schools, particularly particu-larly those of the Big nine conference, of which the University of Chicago is a member, have adopted the fust, open, tricky type, known as the western style. By many it is supposed to bo the most highly developed kind of football. foot-ball. Pump time the cast and tho west will meet in a sufficiently large number num-ber of contests to definitely settle the point. Thus by obtaining two coaches thor oughly trained in tTie now system . the local university has the jump on its opponents, op-ponents, a fact which may make it tho monarch of Rocky mountain and inter-mountain inter-mountain sports, for Norgren and Breathed have been trained bIbo in athletics other than football and may bo expected to introduce new methods in those branches. The first football call of the year will be held at the university campus next Tuesday afternoon at - o'clock. Coach Norgren has been in Chicago for the past two weeks, but. is exported to return todav or tomorrow. Captain Mr lutyre has been in California on a visit, but the football men are hopeful thut he may arrive home in time for the first dav of work. In fact, the 1911 eleven "lias been scattered over the whole country, and most of those who have not yet returned are now pointed in this direction, coming as tast as steel and steam can bring them. In the post the old men returned at their leisure, but the unmerciful training of Norgren has caused a change. Stiff Training Certain. The man who is here for the first practice will not become quite so stiff and sore as the later arrivals, and the man who is partly in condition is fortunate. for-tunate. These facts were loarned last fall during the hardest training season that Crimson athletes have been called upon to undergo. The fact aLso explains ex-plains why Pete Marthakis, the big Greek guard, Brokmeyer and others have been doing daily work on the university uni-versity cinder path." The "U" football foot-ball team, both coach and men, have decided that this is to be a champion ship season, and every knight of the pigskin knows the training will be most gruelling. At least a dozeu old men and a number num-ber of new ones will be out for the first practice. In addition to Mcln-tyre. Mcln-tyre. some who are expected to be on hand are Brokmeyer, Marthakis, Rom-ney, Rom-ney, Darrell and Marc Gardner, Ward, Parry. Hudson and Skolfield. Others who may be there are Couch and Van Pelt. In spite of the severe work that awaits them, the whole Crimson bunch is ready for it, and feels that it will give them a winning team. Mclntyre made a position on the All-Rocky All-Rocky mountain conference eleven last year, and the coach believes that a number more will do so this year, especially espe-cially if the team wins is games. Marthakis. the huge guard, worked faithfully all last season and made a splendid showing. He played every game and was not taken oufonce, quite a record in itself. It is thought he will win an all-conference position this fall. |
