I NOW come to a topic relating to my physical exercise lessons that requires very careful handling so that my meaning will be made fully clear. I am to talk to you about boxing, and not about prize-fighting. 1 have run Into hundreds of persons who laugh Ilgfltly or sneer when I try to explain to them that In some schools, and even in some churches, boxing box-ing classes for girls have been formed. I read the other day of a church in the Harlem Har-lem section of New York that there is a vast difference be-tween be-tween the two. But they are as different as" night and day. Prize-fighting is a profession; boxing box-ing a science. Prize-fighting Is a so-called so-called "sport" in which the two men batter away at each other, acl- n.ieol1.r nr- , ,r, -1 O n 1 1 ft r a 1 1 V TIO mftt- ter which, until one of them manages to reduce the other to s. state of physical helplessness. Boxing is the art of self-defense, a protective science, a body-builder, an eye-qulckener and the best all-around physical developer I know of for boy or girl, man or woman. It makes a manly man out of a boy and a courageous woman out of a timid one. But they have attained this knowledge and skill for the sole object of being able to protect themselves should the occasion demand it. And you never know when that will occur. I don't like prize-fighting for itself, and never did. 1 love horses and ranch life. But I picked up boxing when a boy, and long before my thoughts ever turned toward a prize ring boxing helped me out of many a difficulty where I would otherwise have been forced to see some wrong go unrlghted. If I have a savage instinct in me It has never come to the surface. Even when I lose my temper, which occurs occasionally, I have no desire to maim and slaughter. I don't like to feel that I have deliberately tried to hurt anybody. any-body. In my boyhood days I always tried to be fair in my lighting. I never kicked my opponent when he fell down, like I have seen boys do in street fights, but I was contented to use my skill at protecting myself and not strike any more blows than I had to. I have a little son who Is going to be a farmer some day. He doesn't know it, but he is. But he is also going to be a mighty fine boxer, too. I wouldn't see him a prize-fighter for all the gold in the world, but I would be ashamed of him if he didn't know something about boxing. I think I have explained the situation clearly, so that those prejudiced against prize-fighting will recognize the difference between it and boxing. Boxing teaches a man to control his temper. If he doesn't he can't box. And a man who is cool-headed can always get the best of an opponent if the latter loses his temRer. A tap on the nose from a large glove le Irritating, but if the boxing match Is a friendly one it should not be the cause of IB-feeling. IB-feeling. Every boy wants to know how to box. I wish girls took as much Interest in it as boys and men, because I think they need Its protection pro-tection as much as we do. If every girl would Include boxing in her physical training at school she could take care of mashers herself without having to call upon brother or sweetheart sweet-heart for help. I was pleased to learn that this Idea has occurred to a good maiy school principals, so In boxing, first study how to hold your hands. The natural position, and the one that a greenhorn always falls Into, Is to put his right foot forward, hold out his right fist In front of him and hold back his left The position should be exactly reveresed. Put out your left arm In front of you and hold your right fairly close to your body, with the fist slightly in front of your jaw. Stand sideways side-ways to your opponent as much as possible. Don't expose any more of your body to him than you have to. My picture illustrates the greatest and best blow In boxing, the straight left. It is the easiest blow to deliver and the hardest one to get away from. The greatest boxers ln the world have always been "straight left" boxers. There is no blow ln the world that will make a bully quit so quickly as a straight left Watch a couple of street urchins fighting, and what do you see? Wild swings, hooks everything every-thing but the straight left. And what is the consequence? They batter each other until they become exhausted by their own efforts and a chance blow gets over to the right spot, ending the battle. I have seen a young man with white hands and creased trousers trim a big street bully neatly and with dispatch by just jabbing a straight left to his nose until ' he quit cold. The man who wants to become a good boxer will recognize the fact that If the straight left is a good blow to deliver a guard for it should be developed. I guard against this blow by continually holding my right glove up near my chin. As the straight left comes I meet it with my right and knock it aside that is If I am quick enough, for a man has to be very quick to guard against this blow. Unless you are constantly on the alert you will never see it coming. Always assume a natural position when boxing. box-ing. After you have learned how to hold your hands stand easily. On your toes is best, but there have been boxers like Bob Fitzsimmons who moved around flat-footed and were marvels mar-vels at it If you, with other boys, have formed a boxing box-ing club, don't start ln to box without a time limit. Have a third boy hold a watch and box one-minute rounds, with a one-minnte rest in between. As soon as you reel you are getting tired, stop. Don't get it into your head that stopping means quitting. You are boxing for exercise, not for money or for the purpose of Willard iUustratinng the straight left, the most valuable blow to the boxer. "Don't get boxing mixed up with says Willard. "They are as different as night and day." I 111" ' ' ' I trying to knock out your opponent And boxing won't do you any good if you tire yourself out. After you find your wind is good and you don't get tired after four or five rounds of one-minute boxing, increase the time of the rounds to two minutes each. Then, when you are in first-class shape, you can extend the time to the regulation three minutes, but which is really very long, as you will find ou. when you start. Use the heaviest gloves you can get. Keep it uppermost in your mind that exercise ex-ercise is your only object in boxing that is to say, exercise and self'protection. Don't get angry if you get a tap on the nose and it hurts a little. Force yourself to control your temper and smile. Keep practising that straight left and don't worry wor-ry about your muscles. If you keep up the boxing the muscles will come, and they'll be just the right muscles, not big knob3 of binding gristle. Nobody ever accused me of having an extraordinarily big arm for a man of my unusual size, but I am said to have the hardest punch of any man in the ring. That is because I have developed my triceps tri-ceps that I spoke to you about in one of my articles, and I know how to shoot out my lefr. The girl who takes up boxing will find that her body becomes symmetrical, or shapely, to use a simpler word. She will never have to worry about getting too fat "Many boxing classes for girls are springing up." boy should learn to box." |
