I s theory has now, however, been exploded, for two women have been to the coast and are on their way home, not in au automobile, but in a motorcycle motor-cycle and side car. What is more, there is not a man of any age or description tucked away for an emergency. Tho women are going it alone and up to date seem to be getting along as well as men could, u inter trie same conditions. condi-tions. Miss Kffie Hotchkiss and her mother constitute the motorcycle party that arrived ar-rived in Salt Lake last week and who expect to leave for the east within the next few da vs. Miss Hotchkiss and mother left Brooklyn, N. Y., for the coast about three months ago. They traveled west over the Sante Ke trail and after visiting the points of interest on the coast, including the fairs, started home over the Lincoln highway. Miss Hotchkiss has become an expert motorcycle mechanic on this trip and can adjust a carburetor to suit the altitude al-titude as well as anv man. Spark plug and magneto troubles are no more to her than baking a cake would be to the ordinary girl. She handles a monkey wrench as well as a man. They have had no trouble except with tires, and Miss Hotchkiss says their tire bill has been something awful. Speaking of the trip she said: Yes, we are making the drive all alone. We do not need a man along for I cau do any work necessary neces-sary on my motorcycle. We are not afraid of anyone, so why have a man along to be a troublesome nuisance? We take our time, and believe me, when tho roHds are good we certainly hit it up some. I can't say that 1 like your ntkali roads out here, but I have become used to them and I am afraid when I get back home I will long for alkali roads and sagebrush. We have seen several coyotes, but they didn 't bother us, bo wo did not bother them. We met hundreds of automobiles auto-mobiles along the road and T have had an opportunity to help many a man adjust nit automobilo troubles. It is a great trip and I wouldn 't take any amount of raonev for the experiences I have had. 1 would like to stay right here in Salt Lake, but we will soon have to be on our way. Miss Hotchkiss intends to leave for the east over the Lincoln highwav and expects to be home before snow flies. |
