Show GRAIN ELEVATOR IS DESTROYED BY FIRE Chesapeake & Ohio Concern Con-cern Suffers $2,000,000 Loss in Newport News. NEWPORT NEWS, Va., Sept. 4. The Chesapeake & Ohio grain elevator "A," one of the largest in the United States, was destroyed by fire here tonight with a loss estimated at $2,000,000. First reports re-ports of fatalities were not verified. Nearly 500.000 bushels of wheat was in the elevator. Other property destroyed de-stroyed included the local offices of the United States Shipping- company and the Holland -American line grain pier No. 5 was damaged. Two other piers and three Bteamships were threatened. The origin, of the fire had not been ascertained tonight. Railway officials asserted as-serted It apparently started near the center of the elevator. Before it was discovered it had spread from top to bottom of the big eleven-storv structure. struc-ture. The heat was so intense that for an hour firemen could not approach wltliin several blocks, and no effort could be made to combat the flames. Shifting of the wind finally enabled the firemen to approach near enough to fight the fire away from other buildings in tlus danger zone.
