Show AUSTRIANS CLAIM SERTH RIVER IS CROSSED BY ARMY VIENNA, Sept. 4. via London, Sept. 4, S :30 p. m. The following Austrian official of-ficial war statement was given out here today : Along the entire front between the Dniester and the southern border of the great Pripet marshes, the enemy yesterday offered heavy resistance and repeatedly attempted by counter coun-ter attacks to increase the strength of his defense. On the lower Sereth and close to the mouth thereof, our troops have gained a firm footing on the east bank of the river. After stubborn fighting, they captured cap-tured a strongly consolidated position posi-tion on the height of Sloterla, northwest north-west of Slnkow, taking two officers and 1400 men prisoners. Before Trembowla a na Tarnopola it is comparatively quiet. North of Zalocs and east of Brody the army of General von Boehm-Ermolli broke through the enemy line at numerous numer-ous points, capturing six officers, among them one colonel, and 1200 prisoners. In Volhynia, in the sector west of Dubno, near Olyka. the resistance of the Russians has not yet been broken. The situation of the Aus-tro-Hungarian troops northeast of Pruszany is unchanged. Since the useless attacks against the plateau of IjavB.rrone and the bridgehead of Tolmino. the Italian activity has slackened visibly.' Besides Be-sides artillery engagements, the only fighting worth mentioning took place before the southern end of the bridgehead bridge-head of Tolmino, where the enemy was repulsed. An attack early tills morning in the district of the Dolomites, from Boede-nalp Boede-nalp against Inlchriedl. also failed. |
