Show ENTERTAIN AT cai COMPANY B FIRST INFANTRY HOSTS AT PARRY HALL hundred and twenty fiva guests competitive drill parties will be monthly from wednesdays standard company B first infantry of the utah state militia entertained about one brundred and twenty five guests in the parry hall and washington att a card party given for the purpose of creating interest in the company and encouraging enlistment the main feature of the evening in the manual of arms was a competitive drill given kiy the members ot the company A dainty luncheon was served and dancing indulged in captain A H inelss has spent considerable sid erable time in bringing about these affairs hoping thereby to encourage recruits from the desirable class of young men the affair Is given without cost to the guests each member of the company being permitted to invite as many arlenda as he may desire for last evenings affair the hall was prettily decorated with the national colors the party was a decided success and like entertainments will be given each month further efforts will be made in a social way to create interest in the militia chich seems to have been lacking to a great degree heretofore high five was played at cards and immediately afterward a pretty innovation was introduced upon the stage there had been erected a tent a camp firo with guns stacked taps were blown the lights in the hall were suddenly extinguished the camp fire illuminated lumina ted the place and while a sentry marched to and fro a quartette seated within abe tent sang soldier boy the competitive drill was then given and consisted of three drills each error eliminated the member from the ranks in this way the number soon dwindled down to three james cleary T F and corporal walter thompson these three then competed tor the prize which was a silver souvenir the former finally won out and the presentation was made by the officers and the first sargeant this prize will be drilled for on the first wednesday ot each month hereafter chich Is the regular inspection and the person winning it three times consecutively becomes tho owner of the souvenir the judge in the drill work was captain bassett 0 company H of salt lake who came up specially for the occasion colonel george M hanson and col seaman of the governors staff were also present among the other military features was an equipment race and bayonet exercise which were cleverly executed indicating that the boys in blue have been devoting julme to drill which they presented a pleasing appearance r pe arance the winners afe cards were ladles first prize picture mrs M M dawley gents first prize picture ed clayton ladles booby prize miss smith gents booby prize quartermaster H ruben |
