There will be somewhat limited action this week as the Christmas break approaches. Games last night found Bonneville at Viewmont and Roy at Davis, while Thursday games will find Viewmont at Lay-ton, Lay-ton, Bountiful at West Jordan and Jordan at Woods Cross. II ' J 1 t t js n l it I By TOM HARALDSEN WOODS CROSS-The Woods Aross Wildcats used a potent shoot-J shoot-J attack to earn an 81-64 victory defending state champ Layton ' during preseason basketball action Friday night. Woods Cross improved im-proved its record to 2-5 on the year with the win. The Wildcats took a 25-16 first quarter lead behind the shooting of senior Dave Simon and junior Kitt Rawlings. Both tallied seven points in that opening quarter, while Lay-ton Lay-ton was kept in the game almost single-handedly by senior Shane Groskrevtz, who hit five of six shots for 10 points. But the Lancers began rallying in the second period, pulling to within two at 40-38 by halftime. Both teams shot extremely well the first 16 minutes, Layton hitting 18 of 29 shots from the field (62 percent) while Woods Cross hit 17 of 28 shots (61 percent). The Lancers actually assumed the lead early in the third quarter, but the Wildcats came alive midway mid-way through the period, inspired by the play of center Mike Wright. Wright had just four points, but his rebounding and defense slowed the Lancers down. After three quarters, it was 61-53 for the hosts. Woods Cross put the game away in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Lancers 20-11 as Layton was very cold from the line. The 'Cats received balanced scoring from Rawlings with 19, Wright with 16, Simon with 12, Todd Fuller with eight and both Chad Rawlings and Shaun Cullimore with seven each. Layton was led by Groskrevtz with 21, while Chris Arguello had 11 and three Lancers, Antoine Freeland, Dave Rees and Brady Burton, each added 10. The Wildcats remained hot from JBI IIUUM III HIWWPIWWWWW I I I the field, finishing with 62 percent shooting, while Layton cooled to 45 percent. The Lancers also made just five of 17 free throws while falling to 1-7 for the year. In other action last week: ROY 76 WOODS CROSS 74 The Wildcats lost a tough one to the talented Royals, but stayed close all the way. Fuller led the scoring with 20, Rawlings had 17, Justin Shaw added 16 and Simon chipped in 10. BOUNTIFUL 74 BONNEVILLE BONNEVI-LLE 67 BINGHAM 81 BOUNTIFUL 74 On Tuesday, the Braves knocked off their second undefeated team in as many tries as they dropped the Lakers. Bonneville held a brief 5-0 lead until Bountiful went on an 18-3 run and was never headed. The Lakers made several runs at the host Braves, led by Tanaka Beard with 19, but four Braves scored in double figures as Bonneville Bonne-ville lost for the first time in eight tries. Lance Evans had 19 points, Troy Fuller 18, Steve Wilkinson 14 and Brandon O'Brien added 12. On Wednesday, the Braves started star-ted slowly and couldn't catch up in losing to the unbeaten Miners at Bingham. Bi-ngham. Wilkinson was top gun with 16 points, O'Brien had 13 and Evans chipped in 10. Bountiful is now 5-3 on the preseason. DAVIS 76 LAYTON 65 OGDEN 62 DAVIS 52 JUDGE 69 DAVIS 61 The Darts began the week with an 11 -point win over Layton, as Jon Rhodes had 18, Clark Caldwell had 15 and Tom Bartley added 16. On Thursday, Ogden prevailed over the Darts despite 15 from Caldwell, 12 from Chad Poulson and 1 1 from Rhodes. The week ended en-ded on Friday with a tough loss to Judge. Davis led by eight after three quarters, but the Bulldogs rallied in Woods Cross' Ryan Arbon withstood the defensive efforts, and yelling, of these two Layton players to pass this ball off to a teammate during the Wildcats' 81-64 victory Friday night. The defending state champ Lancers fell to 1 -7 with the loss. |
