By MELINDA ROYLANCE "Dough-not" forget you're number one and that we love you! This was the encouraging message given to 20 Bountiful High students prior to their participation in the Portia Douglas competition. With donuts digested, they began their journey to victory at Ogden High School. Maybe it was the extra adrenaline flowing because of nervousness, or maybe the encouraging words and warm up exercises from the new coach John Whiting, or maybe it was sheer talent that won Bountiful High School second place in sweepstakes. It is difficult enough to place in the top five when a school enters a full slate of competitors, competi-tors, but BHS didsi.' even, do that, and they still managed to pull into second place, only five small points behind first place. Many BHS students felt their hard work had paid off when they placed in the top three of their individual indi-vidual event. These people included: in-cluded: John Eyring, first place oratory. Although John's morning started off wrong by his waking up late and missing the bus, he still was able to pull himself together and wow the judges (as he always docs). Melinda Roylance, second place, international extcmp. Her dramatic openings and well-organized points seemed to impress the judges as Melinda shared her knowledge on everything from whales to Haiti. Jennifer Lundgren, second place, national extemp. Talented Jennifer does everything from dramatic interpretations to policy debate and does it well. Her speaking style is one that few can resist. Carrie Schriever, second place, oratory. Who ever said it was impossible im-possible to get back into the swing of things after being out? After spending a year studying abroad, Carrie managed to jump right back into competitive speaking and beautifully beau-tifully capture second place. Trina Crowther, third place, Lincoln-Douglas debate. Her coming home with a perfect 4.0 record and high -speaker points is evidence of Trina's tremendous ability to persuade, per-suade, argue and analyze. Other talented team mambers are Michelle Mills, oratory; Kristen Anderson, oratory; Daren Steuart, national extemp; Rachel Mabey, fourth place national extemp; Jennifer Jen-nifer Taylor, fifth place national extemp; ex-temp; Aundrea Heath, international extemp; Kami Miner, semi-finalist international extemp; Karilyn Spencer, impromptu; Brenda Bullock, Bul-lock, impromptu; Jenny Harris, impromptu; im-promptu; Darron Merrill, impromptu; impromp-tu; Catherine Doxey, congress; Dave Crippon, fifth place Congress |
