Show New region realignment awaits January action Homer, agreed with Mr. Hawkins. "We can't compete effectively in all areas other than sports or in some of the minor sports like track and wrestling," he stated. Both principals told the Board of Education that school principals need more imput into realignment decisions. After a marathon discussion, the Board of Education decided to support sup-port attempts at getting the four large county high schools into one region and getting Woods Cross and Bountiful into a geographically compatible 3-A region. The proposed realignment will be presented to the UHSAA Legislative Legis-lative Council on Jan. 11 for final approval. That meeting will begin at 3 p.m. in the Little America Hotel. The classification would last from 1989 until 1993, when realignment realign-ment would again be considered. Regional competition includes 20 activities, not just athletics. By DONETA GATHERUM After nearly 18 months of listening listen-ing to testimony and drawing up proposals, the executive board of the Utah High School Activities Association has a fairly solid recommendation re-commendation for the realignment of high schools into competitive regions re-gions beginning with the fall, 1989 season. The proposal has the support of administrators in Davis County, because it places the county high schools in the same regions, and with schools of similar size. Region One, consisting of 4-A schools with student bodies of 1 200 or over, would include Bonneville, Clearfield, Layton, Roy, Weber, Davis and Viewmont. Region Six would have 3-A classifications clas-sifications of student bodies between be-tween 551 and 1199 students. Included In-cluded in this region would be Woods Cross, Bountiful, Granite, Judge, Jordan, Tooele, West and Murray. Earlier proposals placed Woods Cross and Bountiful into the 4-A classification, a position not favored fa-vored by the administration or coaches at either school. Woods Cross Principal, Wally Hawkins, told the Davis Board of Education at its Dec. 6 meeting that he, "...had tremendous concerns about ab-out keeping Woods Cross in the 4-A division." He claimed Woods Cross had been the "kicking stone in the district for many years, winning win-ning only 30 percent of its football games. We are losing games because be-cause we can't compete with larger schools. I can't begin to tell you what losing does to a student body." Bountiful's principal, Dr. Rulon |
