Show School asbestos inspection complete By DONETA GATHERUM FARMINGTON - The work of assessing the amount of asbestos material in the buildings belonging to the Davis School District has been completed by IHI (Industrial Health Inc.), an accredited inspection in-spection company, and the report shows that some removal projects will require work by an outside asbestos as-bestos abatement firm that the majority of the corrections can be done by the district maintenance staff. Of the 133 buildings inspected, 54 were found to be free of asbestos. asbes-tos. Assistant Superintendent Dean Penrod indicated removal of asbes tos in the buildings where it was found is now taking place. Problems Prob-lems varied from asbestos in boiler gaskets and pipe insulation to ceiling ceil-ing surfaces and tile. The inspection team found 346 different asbestos-containing asbestos-containing materials within the district. dis-trict. Once the material was identified, the district had five options to cor- , : i . - 1 - - 1 1 1 i i i rect the problem. First, the material could be left as it is and the maintenance main-tenance staff would work to minimize mini-mize the hazard. Second, the material mate-rial could be removed. This is the only appropriate soluuon in many cases. Third, the damaged portions of the materials could be repaired. Fourth, the material could be enclosed en-closed in an air-tight container. Fifth, the material could be encap- sulated with a hard coating that locks the fibers down. Repair and removal were the op- , tions most frequently used by the school district. The school district undertook the asbestos inspection in response to an Oct 30, 1987 Federal EPA directive direc-tive controlling asbestos materials in public and private school buildings. build-ings. After the initial inspections, the district was required to develop an accredited management play by Oct. 12, 1988. The plan must be implemented by July 9, 1989.- All district custodial and maintenance main-tenance workers who might come in contact with asbestos must receive two hours of general asbestos training. train-ing. Those who work to remove the material must receive an additional 14 hours of training. Buildings containing asbestos materials must receive updated inspections in-spections every six months. This can be done by the district staff. A full re-inspection by an accredited firm must be completed every three years. Record keeping is required to document the management plan, preventive measures, air sampling, periodic surveillance. Bill Wagner and Michael Blumer, representatives of the IHL, complimented Davis District on getting the control program completed com-pleted in conformity with the EPA deadline. They noted that while the district had to spend several thousands of dollars on the inspection in-spection and additional money on the repair and removal projects, the expense was less than it would have been if the district had waited because be-cause the new regulations are more specific and expensive than the ones that governed the Davis District Dis-trict evaluation and clean-up. A soon-to-be-published book written by a probation and FBI official credits Kaysville's Harry Jones as arresting the mysterious hijacker, D.B. Cooper. Co-oper.
