A Allen Freestone of Viewmont, in white, captured the title at 145 and was voted top wrestler in the upper weights during the Viewmont High Wrestling Invitational last weekend. Freestone, who beat Alta's Shad Alvey, shown here, in the final, was also named Clipper Male Athlete of the Week for his efforts. He remains re-mains unbeaten in 1 2 matches thus far this season. Vikes second at wrestling tourney By TOM HARALDSEN VIEWMONT HIGH-BOX Elder took home the team title, while three local wrestlers won individual crowns during the eighth annual Viewmont High Invitational Wrestling Wres-tling Tournament which concluded Saturday night. The Bees, a perennial power in 4-A, captured first with 237 points, while host Viewmont finished second se-cond with 177.5. Among other local schools, Layton .. was..fifth . with 129.5, Clearfield finished sixth' at 128, Davis was 10th at 68.5, and Bountiful 11th with 67 in the 16-team field. Viewmont's Allen Freestone, who is now 12-0 on the year at 145, was voted top wrestler in the upper division weights by coaches at the meet. The lower division title went to Chris Tenney of American Fork, champ at 112. Among local winners and placers were Layton's Chris Arguello, first at 103 with a pin of Clearfield's Scott Higley in the final; Layton's Jeff Burton, fourth at 112; and Viewmont's Jason Tanner, who improved im-proved his mark to 11-0 on the year with a win at 119. Tanner dc-cisioned dc-cisioned Layton's Mike Brown 5-4 in the final. At 130, Layton's Don Benedict took second, while Van Christenscn of Viewmont took third. Rocky Halterrnan o, Viewmonr took, third ... at 135 after narrowly losing a match to eventual champ Nathan Hilton of Pleasant Grove in the semifinals. And Ryan Wilson of Viewmont pinned Boone Kirkman of Clearfield Clear-field at 3:28 to win the title in the 140 division. Doug Monk of Bountiful Boun-tiful was fourth at that weight. Freestone decisioned Shad Alvey of Alta 6-2 in the finals at 145. In the same division, Don Kranendonk of Davis came back to take third. At 152, Darrin Zesiger of Viewmont View-mont was pinned in the finals by Evanston High's Garth Wagstaff at 3:24. Juan Eureste of Layton took fourth. Bountiful High's Ali Salari took a 9-1 decision over Clearfield's Clear-field's Jon Wojciechowski to take the title at 160, while DeeLynn Zesiger Ze-siger of Viewmont was fourth. Clearfield's Ron Mawyer used a 6-4 overtime decision to take the title ti-tle at 171. Lance Bennett of Davis . was third, and Ryan Eggett of -Bountiful was fifth. At 189, Viewmont's View-mont's Shane George was fifth, while at heavyweight, Bill Garrit-son Garrit-son of Clearfield took first. Pleasant Grove won the junior varsity division, with Viewmont second. se-cond. Local winners in JV action were Layton's Danny Cabrey at 103, John Hammons of Layton at 112, Ken Pitcher of Layton at 119, Mark Molzen of Layton at 125, John Turner of Viewmont at 140, Tony Martinez of Layton at 189, and Viewmont's Scott Jones at heavyweight. hea-vyweight. CYPRUS RESULTS At the Magna Mountain Wrestling Wres-tling Tournament at Cyprus, Woods Cross had three varsity wrestlers place. Shawn Schutz took first at 103, with wins over wrestlers from Cyprus, Logan and Wayne County. At 145, Mike Jacketta was fourth, and heavyweight wrestler Donovan Anderson was second with wins over competitors from Logan and Wayne County. He lost in the finals to Cyprus' Jeff Messina. In the JV tournament at Cyprus, the Wildcats finished second, with individual champions including Kimball Walton at 103, Robbie Davis at 125, Chuck Eaton at 140 and Ben Eaton at 145. |
