Show Medical services council recommends supervisor By GARY R. BLODGETT FARMINGTON The need for a designated, supervising medical director for emergency medical treatment in Davis County was recommended re-commended by the Davis County Medical Services Council. The committee agreed that the scope of emergency medical treatment treat-ment in the county had grown so much in the past decade that a designated, de-signated, part-time supervisor is needed. So the EMS Council appointed Dr. Dennis Wyman, a physician in the Lakeview Hospital Emergency Room, as interim director until further study of the program can be completed. The EMS Council also appointed a subcommittee to pre- pare an outline of services, job description de-scription and how a part-time job can be financed. Dr. Wyman, who already acts as medical director to the Davis County Sheriffs Department Paramedic Para-medic Program, has served on the EMS Council for 10 years and has prepared many of the medical policies poli-cies and protocols used by the paramedics pa-ramedics and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) in the county. He noted that paramedics and EMTs throughout the state operate under state guidelines and that the new state and federal policies require re-quire that agencies have a designated desig-nated medical advisor. "Dr. Wyman has held this position posi-tion in an unofficial capacity in the county for several years," said Capt. K.D. Simpson, commander of the Davis County Paramedics Unit. "This recent action only makes it official." He noted that there are two types of grant money from the state one based on pericapita and the other is awarded on a competitive basis with agencies showing the greatest need for equipment or training. Capt. Simpson noted that since Emergency Medical Services is designated de-signated by the state as the governing gov-erning body for all agencies in the county that want to offer these services, ser-vices, then the EMS Council has the authority to require that all agencies give a portion of their grant money to be used to finance payment of an emergency medical director. But Bountiful Fire Chief Jerry Lemon disagreed. He said he is not sure that the EMS medical director will qualify as the medical advisor pertaining pertain-ing to the state standards and . that his department, along with other fire departments in the county, coun-ty, will need a similar director to meet future federal and state regulations. reg-ulations. Dr. Wyman told the EMS Com-, mittee that at least one-third to . one-half of all physicians' working time will be required to accomplish the job of an EMS director. "On that basis, I will be willing to consider con-sider the position," he said, "but I will not be ready to take on the job on a permanent basis at this time." IZZZZZZZZI |
