Show Lancer Lexicon By GINGER WATTS Now that the turkey has grown moldy in the back of the refrigerator, refrigera-tor, and that enormous box of Christmas decorations has been lugged upstairs, activities at Layton High are coming and going like rotten rot-ten food and tinsel. Creating a snowball effect, Lay-ton's Lay-ton's debate team plowed their way to victory at the Demosthenes Doubles Dou-bles held at Olympus High School. Forty-six students competed in the two tournaments that were held. Cross examination, oration, and dramatic speaking were just a few of the areas in which the team competed. com-peted. Those taking specific honors included Craig Miller and Rusty Petersen for advanced Lincoln J)ouglas doubles; Tony Benjamin ynd Blair Bindrup for advanced cross examination; Scott Willette in novice Lincoln Douglas, and Jon Trent Warner and Andrena Worthy for oration. Other honors were also given. Defeating 25 other schools by a significant margin, Layton took the ultimate award, the Sweepstakes Trophy, proving LHS debate has emerged as a powerhouse to be reckoned with. The National Honor Society began be-gan their annual Santa-Aid Drive which continued until Dec. 16. As their service project, tray favors for rest homes and other items have also been made to benefit others who arc less fortunate. Remember to help others and appreciate what you have during this time of year. Hallways here at Layton are looking more and more like the North Pole every day, with hall decorating continuing through Friday. Fri-day. Each class competes for the best decorated segment of hall, with awards based on creativity, theme and design. Student body officers will judge halls and present awards. Thursday the swim team swam against West Jordan. Both girls' and boys' teams defeated the opposition. oppo-sition. Kendcll Symonds broke her 100 freestyle record, and personal times were set by other members of the team. Blair Bindrup, Brian Mitchell, Mit-chell, and Aaron Niccolaides, were just a few who set personal records. Basketball season has begun, with the girls' and boys' teams starting well. The girls' basketball team won their season opener by defeating Bear River 52-46. Becky Schofield led all scorers with 20 points; ' Megyn Nimori scored eleven points, Sam Hatch, ten. Losing to Bountiful and American Ameri-can Fork, Layton's boys' basketball team bounced back by defeating Mt. View 73-65. High scorers included in-cluded Dave Rees, Chris Trujillo, and Shane Groskreutz. After that speedy synopsis of life at Layton, tune in next week for the continuing saga of high school life. |
