"The competition includes both serious and comic events and each student double-enters." Because of conflicting commitments, commit-ments, Bountiful High did not enter a full slate of students, but the quality qual-ity of each student's effort proved to be enough to capture several coveted co-veted trophies, including second place overall. Melinda Roylance placed first in Olympic impromptu. Jason Ivins won first in heckling. John Eyring placed second in oratory. Ben De-moux De-moux captured second in SPAR (Spontaneous Argumentation). Lana Taylor and Christine Roth placed second in debate. Lana also received third in comic congress. Susan Parkin placed second in Olympian impromptu and fourth in impromptu. Marni Bevan won third in trash extemp. and serious ex-temp. ex-temp. "It's a fun tournament and a great favorite with the students," said Coach Drake. "And students actually do better in serious rounds because they are given a chance to lighten up." Coach Drake, the former LeAnn Cutler, is enjoying her first year as debate coach at BHS. In addition, she teaches honors junior English. A former BHS graduate, LeAnn received re-ceived a degree in English from the University of Utah in 1983. Both LeAnn and Paul were also BHS debaters, and LeAnn is now back to carry on the winning tradition of the Braves. "The students are extremely talented and are doing very well," said LeAnn. "We have many future fu-ture events, and I expect that students stu-dents will continue to work hard and represent Bountiful High well at every level of competition including in-cluding nationals."
