LOWER, DGLT OF CONCRETE U " : ' r Photos herewith show the aristocratic Nelson, the Sampson of the light-weight motor cars, with Manager Pu rdy of Purdy-Keillev company inter-mountain inter-mountain distributors, testing out its airplane engine in the immediate vicinity of the big "U" on University hill. climbed on high, then on second, and finally on low, gear. Equipped with chains to get better traction on the slippery gravel bed of the hillside, it is quite possible that the Kelson car pictured above would climb over the lower edge of university univer-sity "U." Last Thursday morning four intrepid motorists armed with a minimum of courage and a rapid-fire camera capable capa-ble of hitting its objective at any old r:inge, seen or unseen, hit the rugged and devious trail up the sides of the steep inclines of University hill that lead to the giant concreto "U" which stands out so prominently as the most distinguished and gigantic letter in all the west. As fitting sponsor for a big and growing educational institution, this letter "V" was most generously proportioned and its location on the steep side of the big hill would almost defy the inclination of a mountain canary ca-nary to browse in its neighborhood. The trip referred to abovo was designed de-signed to bo the first flight trial of tho snappy Nelson. With lier four pas-sengors, pas-sengors, all lightweights except "Chick" Eoilloy, who makes tho beam tremble at around two hundred avoir-' dupois, the little Nelson swung on her aerial flight to within a few feet of the big concrete letter. When she refused to go farther because of lack of traction the first picture, showing the car 'within twenty feet of the giant "U," was snapped. Other pictures, as depicted above, were taken while the car was making a dash straight, up the steep incline to the lower edge of the emblematic member mem-ber of the alphabet. The letter "U" belongs somewhere in that category of hieroglyphics that the modern trend of thought and expression made necessary to add to the galaxy which began with Alpha and ended with Omega; and the little car that so heroically went up the side hill to within speaking distance of the rim of this big university "U, " .iudging by its marvelous performance, belongs away up at the top of the gal-.axy gal-.axy of motorized vehicles which so eminently and satisfactorily represent the great utility and worth of the internal in-ternal combustion engine in the avenues ave-nues of pregressive and civilizing influences in-fluences dominating this great nation today. After shooting the shoots at the big "U," Manager Purdy headed the Nelson Nel-son out over the new High Line boulevard, boule-vard, which is now under construction along the rim of the foothills of Ensign En-sign peak. The car came through the test without having once boiled the water in the radiator, proving that efficient effi-cient cooling apparatus lias been provided pro-vided for all road emergencies. That the airplane engine of the Nelson is one of the most powerful and flexible fours being built at any motor factory was demonstrated in the way the car |
