PROBLEMS IN DRAUGHTS LITERATURE. The relation of problems to practical play is not easy to affirm, at least when one overlooks over-looks the whole field of European practice. In our own game, l'ayne started with a judicious mixture, and the same may be said for Klurges, although he had a more extensive collection, sufficiently so to warrant issue alone as onr first problem book. La(er authors have been in and out, but, generally speaking, problems have been very subordinate. In our neighbor. France, the old game (practically our own) appears much as in England, both Malle.t and Quercitano giving positions quite subordinate rank. But in (lie present French game (Major Polish) the problem lias practically always been supreme. The lost work of Lnclef (17401 dealt, with coups. Manoury (1770. 1787) gives nothing else, and so on down to our own time. The Dutchman. Van Tuebden. however, gnve one game of play to some 150 positions. Spain is much willi tis and old France. One infers that her first really known work had a good few positions along wilh its games, for Mon-tero Mon-tero was challenged as to three of his positions by his successor, Vallo. and he must have been unluckv if he bad but few problems Willi so manv errors. And there are other considerations on this same point. Vnllo wasn't, interested, apparently, except to upset Montero, for he has onlv one of his own, so to speak. But it is said that n. problem book was issued in Spain in 1010 (by Turso. Miscellanies). And the tradition tra-dition was continued by Caneleias. Garcez and Rica problems and games together. The Italians similarly mix games and analyses. anal-yses. The Russian. Petroff. practically follows fol-lows suit, and so also the Germnns at all periods. pe-riods. Indeed, the only exception to this practice prac-tice of more or less judicious admixture is the Turk. He goes along with the authors in Major Polish by making most of positions. The first work on his game is nil problems, on a superficial super-ficial view n collection of game problems, but a closer view suggesllng a problem cult of the late eighteenth century. And so later works, naturally perhaps, in that this game may be regarded as made to produce strokes In play, but, anvliow. always making much of big shots. One votes for the relation of judicious admixture, admix-ture, but sees the Turkish game as too "strok-ish" "strok-ish" for analysis, and the Major Polish game as too heavy. J.
