' 1 a - - r BOB SAtARTTN jj TED JOffJVSOJY Ted Johnson and Bob Martin Mar-tin Will Try for Cov-eted Cov-eted Honors, TWO Utah long-distance stars will be pitted against the best runners in the west at Denver on June 7, when the annual Rocky Mountain distance classic is held. Stars from ten states have already entered the grind and the Colorado fans expect not oniy to see a record-breaking number of entries in the classic, but they also expect the record for tiie event to be shattered. Ted Johnson, one of the greaetst distance dis-tance ptars ever developed in. Utah and regarded as one of the greatest distance men that ever wrore the spikes in the west, will again be seen in action in the ten and two-fifths miles event. Ted has won the race on three occasions and holds the record for the course, his time being 1 hour, 4 minutes and 1G seconds. In the other races at Denver, Ted finished second. sec-ond. Martin Will Enter. Robert Martin, former University of Illinois Illi-nois track and field captain and accounted account-ed one of the classiest distance men who has ever been seen in action in Utah, will be pitted against the champion at Denver, and scores of fans have already picked the newcomer to U t a h to romp away with the victory. Martin has stepped the two miles in the Big Ten conference in 9:37 and he has a record of 4:29 in the same conference. In the half mile he has been clocked under the 2 -minute mark on several occasions. While in college he was a teammate of the famous Mike Mason, Ma-son, the greatest two-m Her the Big Ten has ever 'developed. Leaving college, Martin competed under the colors of the Illinois Athletic club of Chicago and was a teammate of such stars as Andy Ward. Joie Ray, the greatest distanco runner of the day, and Alma Richards, one of Utah's greatest all-round stars. Tie competed com-peted in several races at Chicago and won his share of the honors. In the western country Martin has made a great showing. At San Francisco he twice defeated Stout of the Olympic club In fast mile races and his victories over Oliver Millard, one of the classiest five-milers five-milers in the game. Martin has never competed in any race over five miles in length. In training locally he has been clocked at record speed, and if he Is jn good shape when the starter sends the men on their way at Littleton on June 7 he will be a hard man to beat. Johnson has been running in n-arious parts of the country since 19fl!, and holds several records. Locally. lie, holds the record for the 4'i -mile city "Marat lion." his time being 23 minutes and 21 seconds, while his record of 1:0-1:16 at Denver has stood since 1017. He defeated some of the best bets in the country at San Francisco Fran-cisco in 1915 in the 12-mile event and won hands down. He will probably run unattached. un-attached. Martin will represent the loc.l lodge of the Klks. He will .have the lodge insignia in-signia on his shirt. With scores of army and navy stars returning from the service, the Colorado fans expect the event to he the fastest that has ever been pulled off. Frank Hall is again expected to enter, and if Frank is a competitor the other men will have to step to win. |
