Show BATTERY DOPE BY PREST-O-LITE MAN Storage or secondary batteries, also called accumulators, consist of cells in which a chemical change is brought about by passing an electric current through them, thereby rendering them capable of giving back electrical energy by discharging discharg-ing them until they return to their original orig-inal chemical condition, according to the General Auto Service company, 1-42 East First South street. Ordinarily, a, storage battery consists . essentially of two sets of plates suspended suspend-ed in a chemical solution. The plates are of metal or metallic oxide, and the solution solu-tion is incapable of acting upon them until an electric current is passed from one plate to the other. This current decomposes de-composes the electrolyte; one of its con-; con-; stituent elements, or radicals, goes to one ' plate and the remaining constituent to ' the other, so that when the passage of i the current ceases there are two chemical I elements, or radicals, with a tendency to i unite, and upon combination the energy i evolved appears as an electric current, which flows in the opposite direction to the charging current. This flow of current cur-rent continues until the cell is restored 1 to its original condition. When this oc-1 oc-1 curs the cell is said to be discharged. |
