Show CHALMERS SO PROVESSUPREIVIACY Car Makes Trip From Wichita Falls, Tex., to Detroit. Just as M. H. Carpenter, ChaJmera dealer in Wichita Falls, Texas, was about to board a train for Detroit a few weeks ago the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen Train-men announced a general strike on all American roads, effective September 4. Carpenter planned to bo absent from home just thirty days. As business was fjti.-eptionally good, he did not intend to be marooned north of Mason and Dixon's line while the railway people fought out their difficulties. As though to so!v his difficulties, a thipment of eighteen Chalmers Slx-30's reached Wichita Falls on the day sohed-ul?d sohed-ul?d for his departure. Taking one of the green cars from the freight car, and without with-out any special preparation, Carpenter ud thro friends started on a tour north. Mr. Carpenter said on his arrival in Detroit: De-troit: We had only a few hours to get under un-der way and were somewhat fearful of taking brand new car over rough country rodds. But our fears wer$ groundless. The 3400 R. P. M. motor worked as smoothly on the first day out as when we rolled up the driveway drive-way at the factory. The 2050-mile drive to Detroit was made in just sixty hours' running time. One hundred and fifteen miles of the trip included plowing through six-inch gumbo in Iowa and Illinois, hut we obtained the fine average of seventeen and one-half miles per gallon gal-lon of gasoline and 940 miles per gallon of lubricating oil. The first 1 miles out of Wichita Falls were through deep sand, hut. although the cur carried 1270 pounds of baggage, camping equipment and passengers, we had no trouble In making the grade. On the smooth stretches of mad and in the mudholes alike we repeatedly re-peatedly passed cars of higher horsepower, horse-power, and not once durum the trip were we called upon to make adjustments. adjust-ments. The hood was never raised except to replenish our supply of Inhricating oil. Right now the car will throttle down to one mile per hour oti hich cear and we have passed the fifty-eight-mile mark on many occasions occa-sions on the smooth roads. A remarkable re-markable feature of the car's yer-formance yer-formance is its aceelerative uualities.-We uualities.-We have timed our gear changes and have found that It is possible to co from a standing start through the goars to fifteen miles per hour in one and two-fifths seconds. On the entire trip wo slept, ceoked and had our meals out of doors. Arriving Ar-riving in Chlcaco, we made n detour up to Milwaukee and from there 'o Wtrolt. On reaching the motor capita! capi-ta! the car ran so beautifully that t e decided to extend our trip through pleven more states. We had traversed nineteen states on our tour north, so we will have madf; good, oir boast of twenty states in thirty days by the time we reah home as,un.
