Show HERBERT D. BROWN II LEGISLATIVE RICE Ogden Contractor Selected by the Republicans to Replace Re-place S. C. Powell. Special to The Tribune. OGDEN, Sept. iii. At a meeting of the Itepublii a n county central committee commit-tee this afternoon Herbert U. Brown, an Ogden contractor, was selected to fill the vaeanry on tho Piepubliean legislative legisla-tive ticket caused by the resignation of Sam :. Powell, one of the four candidates candi-dates for the house of representatives. M r. Brown was one of the six orig-i orig-i n al candidates for the four places on the ticket and was fifth in the list, after the delegates had balloted at the convention, con-vention, September 0. Uther candidates for the vacant place on the ticket were Clarence F. Wright, president, of the Young Men's Republican Republi-can dub, and John G. Gebhart, 2H21 Barlow avenue. The special committee selected by the central committee a week ago to make a recommendation in the matter presented present-ed the names of both Mr. Brown and Mr. Gebhart. Mr. Wright had filed his application with the central committee direct. When a test vote was taken this afternoon aft-ernoon M r. Brown received the largest number of votes of the committee and he was afterward declared the unanimous unani-mous choice. Several prominent Republicans, including in-cluding C. R. Hollingsworth, chairman of the county campaign committee, and P. J. Hendershot, former Progressive, were at the Union station this afternoon after-noon to meet James R. Garfield, former secretary of the deparTment of interior, as ho passed through Ogden from Salt Lake to San Francisco.- Mr. Garfield is a former Progressive and is now connected con-nected with trio Republican national committeo in the work of the present campaign. Arriving from the east this morning, the former cabinet member went direct-to direct-to Salt Lake to confer with Charles W. Fairbanks, Republican candidate for vice president, and the Republican state committee members. At . the present time Mr. Garfield is especially interested inter-ested in the work of organizing' the women wo-men of the west for support of the Republican national candidates. At the meeting of the local central committee this afternoon a sentiment prevailed for an early and active campaign cam-paign in this county according to Mr. Holliugsworth, chairman. As a result of this plans will be put into effect for meetings to bo held throughout the country, starting about October 9. An effort will be made to hold one or more Republican, meetings in every district outside of Ogden before November 7. |
