Show FREIGHT INCREASES ARE NOW SUSPENDED Action Affects Bulk of Iron and Steel 1 Business Going to Russia and I Japan for War Purposes. WASHINGTON, Sept. 30. Freight tariffs proposing increased -rates on iron and steel for export from Chicago, Pittsburg Pitts-burg and other eastern cities to Pacific coa.-t points, were suspended by the interstate in-terstate commerce commission today until un-til January 29 next. The. increases would average 10 cents per hundred pounds from Chicago and , 3 cents from Pittsburg. The commission's action delays the proposed increases which would affect the great bulk of the iron and steel business going from the east for export to Japanese, Russian and other ports for war purposes. The roads whose tariffs are held up include the Pennsylvania and the Philadelphia Phila-delphia & 'Reading. The present rates on iron and steel articles, in carloads, from Chicago is 30 cents, and the proposed rate 40 cents per hundred pounds. The present rato from Pittsburg is 42 cents and the oroposed rate 45 cents per hundred pounds. January 20 also is the date to which the eastern export rate increases on iron and stool recently were suspended by the commission. The manufacturers and shippers interested in-terested in this large traffic claim that the railroads are actuated with a desire to obtain a share of the war munitions profits. |
