Show WILL LIGHT ZI0N FOR HALF PRICE GarfT and Sons Stand by Their Offer to Furnish Cheap Light to the City. TOO good to bo true I his soems to be the light In which the city officials of-ficials look at the proposition of Messrs. Garff and Sons of Logan, to provide Salt Lake with its own lighting system. Municipal ownership of lighting was generally discussed at a special meeting held In the Commercial Commer-cial club building last night, but no understanding was definitely arrived nt and the Logan people have boen asked to place in writing their proposition to the city. Present at the meeting" last night were C Garff and son, Carl Garff of Logan, Mayor Morris, City Engineer Snow, Chief Bywaler of the Fire department and the special committee of the Council, Coun-cil, consisting of Aldermen Black, Martin. Mar-tin. Pi'ftecu. Hartenstein and Barnes. Other of the Councilman would have been present at the meeting but for the fact that It was not held, as announced, at the Mayor's office The Gnrffs In no way backed down from their offer made to Mayor Morris. Mor-ris. They say that they will furnish the city with GO per cent more light than It is gottlng at the present time for the same price and at the end of four years sll tho lighting plant complete to the city at approximately one-fourth Its cott to th-m. They think that they would make enough in four years at tho price now being paid by tho city to more than compensate them for their trouble and outlay. It is understood that the Mayor and menibors of the special committee of the Council havo In their possesion certain cer-tain data on lighting systems lu other cities allowing that Salt Lake pays In the neighborhood of t0 per cent more for Its street lights than other places pay for a like number, and stronger arcs There Is some speculation as to where Messrs. Garff and Sons propose to create cre-ate the power necessary to generate the alectrlc lights. This is their secret and they do not, In justice to their own interests. in-terests. Intend to give It out until tho proper time. The committee received no enlightenment on this score. The understanding was when the meeting adjourned last night that another an-other meeting would be hold some time next week and adjournment was taken subject to call by the chairman of the committee.' |
