Show POLITICS IN PR0V0. Special Correspondence The Tribune, PROVO, May 3. Quito a stir was made . by the City Council lost evening when that body elected W. E. Bott, Councilor from tho Third ward to miccccd Jesse Harding, resigned. Mr. Harding hay. It hciiip, deddod that. City Council llfo Is not as congenial as It might be,' and with a Democratic President and a tlo In the body, decided It was bettor for him to bo on the farm, so moved out thcro and resigned. re-signed. Mr. Harding was elected as a Ropublican from the Third ward, and It was given out cold by the organ that Hon. Eph Homer would bo elected to 1)11 tho vacancy; in fact. It was staled in such a way thut a cood many thought It was fixed, and so Mr. Homer was to bo tlw next Councilman from that ward. But tho Democrats wore not at all slow to grasp the situation, and romemborlng that tho lust Council, which was Republican, Repub-lican, when a vacancy occurred through the death of Councilor Alex. Wilkcns, a Democrat fromahe Second ward, took advantage ad-vantage of the situation and appointed a Republican In tho person of " Councilor Ward, thought It was their time to play politics, and so proceeded to olect Mr. Bott, a Democrat, from tho Republican Third ward. The Republicans romon-strati-d. but to no avail. Councilor Miller created a good deal of amusement by stating that It wqh not fair for the Council to apply the old law of a tooth for a tooth, etc., and In clouuont languugo asked his Democratic brother! not to Judge the present Council by the acts of tho former one. over whoso acts this Council had no control. A. L. Booth evidently believed that the Supremo court baa decided that they could not do this, but that it was the duty of the Council If they wished to make the election legal to elect Mr. Homo?. Somehow the Democrats Demo-crats failed to see the point, and elected Mr Bott; and now It is hold that tho organ or-gan udvlac.i a contest, which makes tho good people "jess laf" at the Inconsistency Inconsist-ency of the orgiui. Two years ago it wati right; now It Is all wrong. Mr. Bott, It Ifl naiil. had experience In Council matters In Nebraska before he cinio to Provo, and Is an enterprising young man. The only thing that can be said ubout him Is that he is a Democrat. We now havo In Republican Provo a Democratic Council, with a Democratic President and a Democratic Mayor, tho Council being six Democrats and four Republicans; and still those in control say they aro "playing good politics."
