Show SIMPLICITY IN RELIGION. From tho Utlc'a (N. Y.) Observer. Creeds and dogmas have been considerably consid-erably modified In the last fifty years. With the advances made by science Intelligence In-telligence has been obliged to accept these advances, nnd dogmatic religion has been driven backward, while practical prac-tical religion has been more and more In demand. The result Is that the necessity ne-cessity for maintaining synods and councils nnd districts has diminished, while the needs of the people for a simple sim-ple religion has Increased. John Calvin Cal-vin would find himself today a tolerated toler-ated stranger In some Presbyterian churches, while Cotton Mather might wander vainly among the Congregationalisms Congregation-alisms seeking the spiritual food he once administered so freely, and John Wesley Wes-ley would certainly be astonished If he met some of our modern Methodists. . |
