Show MEASURING WATER FOR UNCLE SAM Important Preliminary Irrigation "Work Being Dono by Government Govern-ment Experts. EXTENSION of stream measurement measure-ment work Is one of thc chief lines of advancement on which the Government reclamation has been engaged In Utah during the last three months. During that time the number of gauging stations In the State has been doubled and the efficiency of the service Increased in other ways. The most important of these extensions have been made on the Duchesne watershed, wa-tershed, where a complete chain of .stations hus been established as nearly as may be on the line of the proposed canal which will tap the headwaters and tributaries of the Duchesne river to bring water across the range for thc great Utah Irrigation project. Reliable stream measurements are a necessity In preparation for an irrigation project of any magnitude, and when one of the Immensity of this trl-valley project is contemplated they become of the utmost ut-most Importance as a means of determining deter-mining the feasibility of the proposed Improvement. The rapid extension of this work shows, therefore, not only that the Government Is, pushing the preliminary work of the big Irrigation scheme, but that It Is to be In readiness readi-ness to take up smaller projects wherever wher-ever they may be shown to be practicable practi-cable and of service In developing the agricultural or Industrial resources of the country, there being altogether now upward of forty gauging stations quite well scattered over the State. As an indication of the Importance attached to stream measurements in some localities, the town of Logan has established a station on the Logan river at that point, asking only that the Government Gov-ernment see that accurate measurements measure-ments are taken. Prof. Swendsen of the Utah office of the reclamation service ser-vice was glad to enter into such an arrangement, and he furnishes for publication pub-lication in the Logan newspapers each week a summary of the measurements taken. |
