The national amateur trapshooting championship for women will take place at the South Shore Country club, Chicago, 111., August 14 classification day In the Grand American Handicap Trapshooting toprnament. The event will be at 100 yards, each contestant standing 16 yards behind the traphouse. The winner will be awarded a championship trophy. The management of the American Trap-shooting Trap-shooting association is making a determined deter-mined effort to have 1000 shooters participate par-ticipate in the tournament, and if this number of shooters gather in Chicago, quite naturally there will be more fair Dianas in the shoot than ever before. Nine women faced the traps last year in tho Grand American, and for several years the entrants have run between eight and twelve. Notable Women Shooters. There are a number of women who always al-ways attend tile Grand American Handicap Handi-cap tournament, and quite a number of them shoot the .program. Others pick out one or two events. Mrs. Louise Vogel of Detroit; Mich., can always be counted upon as one of the headlihers. Mrs. Vogel always shoots well. Mrs. D. J. Dalton of Warsaw, Ind. : Mrs. Harold Almert of Chicago; Mrs. C. D. Moon of Eau Claiire. Wis.; Miss Emma "Wettleaf Nicholas, Iowa, and Miss Lucile Meusel of Green Lay, Wis., are usually to be found in the competition. Mrs. C. M. Buchanan of Sioux Falls, S. D., and Mrs. A. H. Winkler of Chicago will more than likelv be contestants for the championship, and they are high-class, shots. Mrs. Buchanan is the present woman's champion of South Dakota, and Mrs. "Winkler holds the same title in Illinois. Illi-nois. Both women shot better than 90 per cent to win their titles. It is expected that Chicago will enter a number of women, for there are a number num-ber of fair Dianas in the Windy City who are real good trapshots, among them being Mrs. J. Li. Hooper, Mrs. J. II. May, Mrs. Feathers tone, Mrs. W. A. Davis and daughter, Caroline, and Miss Mabel Skinner. Skin-ner. Good Sport for Women. Trapshooting is proving a most enjoyable enjoy-able sport for women. It isn't an undignified undigni-fied or unwomanly sport, and the women are taking to it quite freely as they are taking to other pastimes. There are women who excel all others of their sex in shooting as they do in other things. Mrs. Topperweln and Annia Oakley are the best of the women trapshooters, but they are professionals. Among the top-notch top-notch amateurs we have Mrs. Vogel; Mr. Buchanan, Mrs. Winkler. Mrs. Almert, Mrs. Groat and Mrs. Schilling. These latter two broko 2S0 targets each out of 3 ("to in the California and Oregon state shoots. Mrs. Harry Harrison of Rochester, Roches-ter, X. Y., recently broke 96 out of 100 targets and won the shoot in Rochester, and not long ago we were informed that Miss Gladys R.eed of Portland, Ore., broke 131 targets in succession. ' Mrs. O. Ij. Garl of Birmingham. Ala., is treasurer of the club in that city, and a real good shot, too. So is Mrs. Margaret Park of Boston; Miss Harriett Hammond of Wilmington, Del.: Mrs. A. B. Moulton and Mrs. Henry Miller of Philadelphia, and one of the best young shots in the east is Miss Alice Doerkln of Patterson, X. J. She gave quite an exhibition in the Lake wood shoot with a 20-ga.uge gun. Tn a recent shoot in Vernon Mrs. W. H. Wagner of that place broke 137 out of l.ro targets, and Mrs. C. M. Buchanan broke l-'S. This kind of shooting keeps them right up with the sterner sex. O'Neill Rated Highly. CLEVELAND, Ohio, July 20.
