I I j Famous Weapon Used in World War to Increase j Area of Destruction. j ONE of the famous "Y" runs, ' which was found during the world j war to be the most effective weapon against tho submarine, is at present on exhibition in front of , the T nited States Navy Recruiting sta- Js -VainI'st,,heetKeitl'-J:;mp0rium build'"g n fF "inch v,-as emnloved be tho iT.,a.. a n df,' trf,rS 1,1 their operation against the L-boats. Officers of thf lecruiting station explained that a deft de-ft rover or other vessel armed with the gun, passing over the location of a submerged suomarine, would dron one or more depth charges in the endeavor to explode a charge within effective distance of the submarine. The particular advantage 0f the "Y" gun it was exnlained, was that one depth charge could be fired on each side of the vessel at the same time, thereby increasing the are.-, nf tiveness. "v",'u The depth bombs, loaded with a high explosive, T. N. T., are fired from the . 1 gun bv a powder charge, curvincr in a half circle in the air before strik" ing the water. The vessel firing tncm is required to make sufficient speed to get clear of the danger area. The de-1, bomb, it was shown, can be made to explode at any de-fh of water The water, pressure releases the exploding mechanism. Whenever a submarine was sighted bv an armed vessel, or especially one armed with a denth bomb 2un, it was usually a case of the submarine submerging ' immediately. immedi-ately. The vessel would then cruise around the submerged submarine in a larp-e circle, at the same time dropping the bombs. 1 h The effect of a denth bomb on a submarine was the buckling 0f the plates, and causing many leaks to start so that the submarine would .be compelled com-pelled to come to the surface, unless it was a direct hit. 'men it would muse so much damage that the submarine would not be able to operate and would sink immediately. |
