Show Odyssey of Mind winners 1 j j and one adult coach to Orem High School for the State Meet where four of the teams placed. The team Seven Wonders of the World received third place, the Geographic Odyssey and Omitronic Humor Division I placed second and the Omitronic Humor Division II received first place. The first place team will now continue to World Odyssey of the 1 Mind Meet at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, where they will compete with students from all over the world. Russia, China, Pakistan, Mexico, Philippines, Soviet Union and West Germany are among the countries participating in the competition. com-petition. The team members who qualified to attend at-tend world competition are Connie McAtee, Dan Anderson, Matthew Stevenson, Lee Crookston, Brook Smith, Lisa Bowers and Danielle NuttalL The first place team made a robot that smiles, sheds tears, looks surprised, sur-prised, looks bored, and shows other emotions. Team members were required to write a humorous script and build all the props and scenery by themselves. The complete long-term project had to be solved, created and built by the students themselves. Adults could teach the skills, such as soldering, but the students had to do the actual work. "They have learned how to brainstorm, organize, create, develop de-velop building skills, try and try again. They also had to write act, LAYTON-Six Odyssey of the Mind teams from Layton Elementary Elemen-tary School participated in the state competition at Orem High School April 4. Since it was their first year to participate, they expected to go just for a wonderful experience. To their surprise, they placed in four categories. No one is more surprised than Diana DeFriez, their teacher. They returned home with one third place, two seconds, and a big first place. Forty-two students have been involved in-volved with Future Problem Solving Solv-ing and Odyssey of the Mind program. pro-gram. Odyssey of the Mind is an international in-ternational organization that works to encourage problem solving through creative thinking. The program was founded about five years ago by Dr. C Samuel Micklus. Each year the students work on new long-term problems which are developed in order to cover a wide range of interests, such as engineering problems while others are performance oriented. They also were involved in spontaneous spon-taneous problems and style of the long-term problem. Each problem had a cost limit of $75, and the students raised their own money to purchase the materials to complete their long-term problems. They had to create and solve the problem and budget their funds. At the State Meet, the teams competed in a spontaneous problem, prob-lem, a long-term problem and style. There were five different categories and four different divisions. The Recycle Crew team members are Hyrum Marston, Daniel Iverson, Sara Smith, Heather Farley, Stacey Schumann, Kurt Wiberg and Bryan S medley. The Omitronic Humor Division I team members are Robert Palmer, Brad Stevenson, Meghann Schafer, Jeana Stratford, Mandy Steward, Valerie Newton, Stephanie Scholes. Seven Wonders of the World team members are Andrea Dover, Timmie Crockett, Marlynn Stevenson, Steven-son, Mike Schiedecker, Dannon Hartman, Tyler Fisher and Daniel Grant. The Geographic Odyssey team is comprised of Hannah Oberg, Jason Gates, Cheylynn Christensen, Cobi Amett, Jacob Peacock, Rachel Baird and Maria Albrecht. |
