Apparently she had thought about this subject. Her reply was instantaneous. in-stantaneous. 'I can gamble in Wendover, buy beer and turn in my driver's license marked 'minor' for a real one." This answer shocked me. "Do you want to gamble in Wendover and buy beer?" I asked, hoping I would receive the answer I wanted to hear. "No," she said, "But I sure want to get a driver's license that doesn't say, "minor." The score was one for mother and zero for daughter, or was it the other way around? As my daughter left the room, I turned "Night Court" back on the television set, but I couldn't watch it If I have a daughter that is nearly twenty-one that means that I'll be MORE than twenty -onemany years more than twenty-one on my next birthday. "What can't I do today that I could do when I was twenty-one?" I asked myself. After thinking about it for a while, I decided there were only two things: chase boys (because I'm married) and act silly. I decided not to as her directly what was happening in seven days, so I went to her dad, "What's going on in seven days that I should know about?" I questioned. He knew less than I did. Finally, I approached my daughter. "What's going to happen that I should know about, that you probably told me a thousand times and I forgot to listen while you were explaining it to me?" I said in an apologetic way. "I'm going to be twenty-one," she said, angerily. "Big deal," I replied. "What's so great about turning twenty-one?" twenty-one?" "That means I'm free to do what I want," was her answer. "Big deal ' I said again. "You've done what you've wanted since three months before you were bom. What's the sudden big change?" "I'm legal," she said, "I can do what I want to do, go where I want to go and say what I want to say. "Want to bet on that, sister?" I |
